The Department of Education and Training is offering incentives to attract teachers to Victorian government schools.

Become a Teacher in a Victorian Government School

Financial incentives will be available for eligible teachers taking up one of the 450 teaching positions to be advertised over the next three financial years.  Payments between $9,000 and $50,000 (pre tax) will be available. In addition, teachers who stay in the position for two years or longer may be eligible for retention payments.

Applications

Applications are now being received for the first 50 positions to commence at the start of the 2020 school year.

Positions available

Financial incentives will be available in rural, regional and metropolitan schools with hard-to-fill positions.

Vacancies may include:

  • Certain hard-to-staff subjects
  • Positions in rural areas
  • Roles in schools with a proportion of disadvantaged students

Qualifications or experience

Teachers currently registered or eligible for registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching and qualified to teach and/or have demonstrated experience in the curriculum area(s) specified for the position.

Personal qualities

Teachers need strong verbal, literacy and cognitive abilities to do their job well. Research indicates that good teachers also demonstrate these attributes: 

  • Motivation to teach.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Willingness to learn.
  • Resilience.
  • Self-efficacy.
  • Conscientiousness.
  • Organisational and planning skills.
