The Fine Arts Technician role supports both staff and students within the Visual and Performing Arts Faculty, with a primary focus on Visual Arts, Media Studies and Visual Communication Design. Limited performing arts support is provided when required, particularly in the absence of the Performing Arts Technician. The role works in close collaboration with teaching staff and students, under the supervision of Faculty Heads, to enhance curriculum delivery through strong technical, logistical and creative support.
This is a fixed term 1 year position,0.8 FTE.
Responsibilities
The responsibilities of the Fine Arts Technician encompass, but are not limited to, the following:
¿ Technical support for teaching and learning:
Provide hands-on technical assistance to students and staff across Visual Art, Media, Visual Communication Design and, where required, Theatre Studies. This includes supporting students with problem solving and troubleshooting materials, tools, equipment and processes to help them realise their artistic and creative ideas safely and effectively.
¿ Fine Arts exhibition and display management:
Support staff to curate student work for display, rotate physical and digital exhibitions, design and maintain exhibition spaces, assist with gallery-style framing and mounting procedures, install and de-install exhibitions, and manage the safe handling and presentation of student work.
¿ Specialist studio and equipment preparation:
Prepare specialist learning environments including art rooms, photography darkroom, and media spaces. Maintain and prepare cameras, photographic equipment, lighting and sound equipment for curriculum use. Provide basic technical support in performance spaces when the Performing Arts Technician is not in attendance.
¿ Faculty administration and resource management:
Assist with ordering of visual art materials and resources, manage stock control, prepare materials for classes, and maintain clean, organised and functional art storerooms and technical spaces.
¿ Classroom and production support:
Provide practical assistance in the preparation of student artwork, classroom displays, and technical elements for exhibitions and school productions. This includes supporting set construction, props and basic costume elements where required, and assisting with theatrette and performance space preparation (including basic staging) when the Performing Arts Technician is not rostered on duty.
¿ Excursion and event support:
Attend excursions with teaching staff to assist with staff supervision ratios where required.
¿ Occupational Health & Safety:
Maintain knowledge and practice of OH&S requirements including the identification, documentation and safe storage of chemicals, safe operation of electrical equipment. Assist staff and students in safe work practices within all Arts learning environments.
¿ Collaboration and communication:
Work collaboratively with teachers and students, providing technical advice, demonstrations (under teacher direction), guidance on materials and processes, and problem-solving support throughout creative projects.
¿ Additional duties:
Undertake other duties as directed by the Principal and/or Faculty Head/s that fall within the scope of the role.

Melbourne High School is a State Government high school for boys in years 9 to 12 with a current enrolment of 1404. Opening in 1905 it was Victoria¿s first state secondary school and moved to its current site in South Yarra in 1927. It is one of four academic select entry Government schools in Victoria. Entry is by an examination in year 8, with a small Principal Discretionary Category. Boys from any school in the state, or outside Victoria, may seek admission. There is also a smaller intake by application and interview at years 10 and 11.
Students in years 9 and 10 undertake a course of core subjects (English, mathematics, science, history, geography, physical education, art, music, and languages ¿ Indonesian, Japanese, French and German) and have a choice of electives. An extensive range of VCE studies across all learning areas is offered to students in years 11 and 12. A health and personal development course also operates at all levels.
The school places special emphasis on its co-curricular program. Years 9 and 10 students spend a week at the Outdoor Education Centre at Millgrove in the Yarra Valley. Sport is compulsory at all levels. The music and drama programmes are extensive and include the house choral competition in March, Winter Concert, musical and drama productions (generally conducted in cooperation with the MacRobertson Girls¿ High School) and the whole school Speech Night at the end of the year. Students are also encouraged to form their own special interest clubs. There are many opportunities for student leadership at all levels.
In addition to government funding the School seeks voluntary contributions from parents.
