About the role
We are seeking an experienced Gastroenterologist to take up temporary sessional hours (parental leave cover) from early March 2026 until late June 2026. The role of our Gastroenterologists is to ensure the delivery of safe, patient centred, evidence-based and efficient care for Gastroenterology patients.
The Gastroenterology Service offered at Barwon Health has seen substantial growth in recent years with the addition of a number of new outpatient clinics including IBD, Endoscopy and Chronic Liver Disease. The service has also expanded its general outpatient clinics to continue to meet the needs of our growing Barwon Southwest population.
Key Responsibilities
Clinical Service Delivery: Provide consultative inpatient and outpatient Gastroenterology care, including direct inpatient management, internal referrals, clinic services, and participation in the consultant on-call roster.
Patient Flow & Discharge Management: Liaise with the Emergency Department to ensure timely access to care; lead effective ward management, criteria-led discharge, discharge planning, and completion of discharge documentation.
Safety, Quality & Governance: Deliver patient-centred, evidence-based care aligned with national standards and organisational policies; contribute to quality improvement, morbidity and mortality review, and complaint resolution processes.
Clinical Leadership & Teamwork: Lead multidisciplinary teams, allocate clinical responsibilities, supervise junior medical staff, and foster a culture of collaboration, communication, and respect.
Education, Training & Supervision: Support and educate junior doctors and trainees through supervision, teaching sessions, performance feedback, and examination preparation.
Research, Development & Professional Responsibilities: Participate in audit, research, and scholarly activity; utilise clinical support time to advance unit objectives; engage in professional development and mandatory training
