Working within the Chief Plant Health Officer Branch (CPHOB) the Varroa Technical Officer will contribute to the long term management of Varroa mite in Victoria through the provision of technical advice and the coordination of state and national policy positions.
The Varroa Technical Officer is responsible for reviewing the current apiary regulatory approach and policy, and providing innovative, high-quality and effective advice to support the project team objectives. This will be underpinned by analysis of relative risks to develop technical and risk modelling advice, and to inform other work areas of structural and policy reforms. The position will play a key role as the Victorian technical lead for national industry reform, including surveillance requirements, management policy and border movements.
The role will work in collaboration with other Divisions across Agriculture Victoria to support the delivery of the Victorian Varroa Transition program. The program aims to support Victoria’s apiculture and broader agricultural sectors to prepare for and adapt to future impacts associated with the establishment of Varroa mite in Victoria. Strong communication skills (written and oral), excellent problem solving and organisational skills are essential, as well as the ability to work collaboratively with key internal and external stakeholders.

This is a fixed term position available until 30 June 2027. The work location for this position is flexible within Victoria with hybrid work arrangements available.
