About the Business Unit:
People, Safety, Culture and Communications provide Human Resource services to the Department of Justice & Community Safety (the department) in the following functional areas:
- Learning and Capability;
- Human Resource Services; and
- Workplace Relations.
Learning and Capability (L&C) comprises of four teams of which the RTO is one team, each having the following broad areas of L&C activity across the department:
- the Justice and Community Safety RTO is responsible for the accredited Vocational Education and Training (VET) for sheriff's, custodial and youth justice (YJ) officers;
- the Justice Learning Team have responsibility for corporate training and development
- the Corrections Victoria L&C Team manages specialised project and consultancy services to Corrections Victoria;
- the Youth Justice L&C Team manages specialised project and consultancy services to Youth Justice.
The Nexus team have responsibility for the management of learning and performance systems. The RTO currently operates within the Australian Quality Training Framework (AQTF) Conditions and Standards and requirements of the Victorian Registration and Qualification Authority (VRQA) Guidelines, within the context of a vocational setting.
About the Role:
The RTO Trainer and Assessor will report to the RTO Manager and will be responsible for the following:
- Assessing workbooks and tasks for students enrolled in Certificate III and IV in Correctional Practice.
- Conducting competency conversations and assess portfolios for students completing RPL
- Providing face-to-face and remote support for students enrolled in in Certificate III and IV in Correctional Practice and provide feedback as required
- Accurately completing all administrative functions required to process assessment workbooks and tasks following RTO policies and procedures
- Attending meetings and participate in course validation sessions and industry consultation
- Liaising with training team members to assist and support assessment requirements
- Maintaining industry and vocational education and training (VET) currency by completing course updates and professional development.
- Providing administrative and compliance support to the RTO as required
To be considered, the applicant must demonstrate experience in training and assessment services that comply with Vocational Education and Training [VET] standards and Victorian Registration and Qualification Authority [VRQA] guidelines.
As part of this role, the Trainer and Assessor will be required to work in units within the secure and open sites of Youth Justice Precincts across Victoria.

- Sound understanding of principles of adult learning and experience with competency-based training and assessment
- Knowledge of Registered Training Organisation standards and processes or the delivery of national qualifications
- A thorough understanding of the operational procedures and complexities within a custodial environment
- An understanding of managing critical i
ncidents.
Qualifications/Requirements:
- A current Certificate IV in Training and Assessment qualification is essential for this role
- A current Certificate III in Correctional Practice qualification is essential for this role
- A current Certificate IV in Correctional Practice qualification is essential for this role
- A current driver's licence is required due to the need to work across different locations.
