About the role
Reporting to the Taskforce Team Manager, Compliance and Investigations, the Taskforce Lead Compliance Investigator is responsible for leading complex compliance reviews and investigations into significant breaches of consumer law. The role contributes to a range of compliance and enforcement outcomes, including court and tribunal proceedings, in line with the department’s integrated compliance and enforcement approach.
Operating withing a dynamic and often high-profile environment, the role requires sound judgement, strong investigative capability, and the ability to manage competing priorities. The Lead Compliance Investigator leads matters culminating in compliance and enforcement interventions, using a range of risk-based compliance and enforcement tools and approaches. The Lead Compliance Investigator also provides guidance and support to team members, contributing to a consistent and high-quality approach to regulatory delivery and expertise to less experienced colleagues.
Key Accountabilities include
· Lead, plan and conduct a range of inquiries, investigations, and compliance monitoring activities pursuant to the legislation administered by this office, including the preparation of reports and briefs of evidence. Obtain comprehensive written statements and affidavits for use in legal proceedings.
· Undertake advanced case management which may include cross-agency or CAV-wide collaboration.
· Apply specialist knowledge and sound judgement to support and drive components of compliance and enforcement programs within an integrated regulatory framework.
· Provide information to traders, consumers, community groups and internal stakeholders on rights and obligations under relevant legislation and promote voluntary compliance.
About you
To be considered for the role, you must be able to demonstrate:
· Technical expertise and regulatory application: Demonstrated experience leading and conducting complex civil and/or criminal investigations and has the ability to prepare and support enforcement proceedings in Courts and Tribunals including preparing witness statements and civil/criminal briefs of evidence.
· Case management leadership: Experience planning, prioritising and managing complex casework and projects, leading staff and colleagues to ensure timely and accurate outcomes-focused delivery aligned to organisational objectives.
· Communication and stakeholder engagement: Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce clear, evidence-based reports and explain complex concepts. Builds effective relationships and uses influence and negotiation skills to achieve outcomes.
· Critical thinking and problem solving: Strong analytical capability, assessing complex issues from multiple perspective, identifying systemic risks, and implementing outcomes-focused solutions that align with department objectives.
· Collaboration and interpersonal skills: Builds and develops internal and external stakeholder relationships, managing challenging interactions with professionalism, resolving conflict constructively and contributing to a positive and inclusive team environment.
· Adaptability and leadership: Demonstrates resilience, flexibility, upholds team values and culture, and demonstrates leadership in a dynamic environment, adapts to changing priorities and leads continuous improvement and change initiatives within the team.
Mandatory requirements
· Certificate IV in Government (Investigations) or equivalent is essential. Alternatively, relevant tertiary qualifications in Commerce, Economics, Law, or other related fields may be considered.
· A minimum of two years previous investigative or compliance/enforcement experience is highly desirable.
· A current Driver’s Licence is essential.
