This is an Ongoing Full Time Position.
The Sustainability and Environment Officer provides specialist environmental advice across regional projects, supporting investigations, planning, assessments and delivery to ensure compliance with legislation and achieve positive environmental outcomes. Working closely with internal teams and external stakeholders, the role plays a key part in meeting government and community expectations for sustainable project delivery. Operating in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities, the position requires a proactive, agile professional who can make informed decisions in dynamic conditions.

To be successful in this role, the ideal candidate will demonstrate strong applied knowledge of environmental management and legislation, using their technical expertise to ensure compliance and deliver sustainable outcomes across diverse projects. They will bring sound judgment, critical thinking and problem-solving skills to navigate complex issues, while working collaboratively with stakeholders to shape effective, timely solutions. Success in this role relies on the ability to adapt to shifting priorities, maintain resilience in a dynamic environment, and deliver high-quality environmental advice and project support that aligns with regional and organisational goals.

Position accountabilities
– Provide sound advice to ensure effective environmental management in accordance with relevant State and Federal legislation, including a sound understanding and application of the Victorian native vegetation clearing regulations. – Apply technical skills to exercise independent judgment in the development, delivery, monitoring and review of moderately complex environmental investigations, to support the delivery of transport infrastructure projects.
– Undertake technical reviews of environmental data, reports, documents and initiatives to provide feedback and advice to project staff. Manage environmental requirements both on and off-site including site-based biodiversity assessments, develop briefs, manage reporting and provide environmental support during and post construction.
– Develop initiatives to promote a culture of minimal harm to the environment, and identify and implement environmental sustainability principles for moderately complex projects.
Qualifications and experience
Mandatory
– A relevant tertiary qualification in an environmental discipline or other relevant tertiary qualification with a minimum 3+ years’ experience in an environmental field.
– Australian drivers licence
Desirable
– Vegetation Quality Assessment Accreditation– Previous experience working for an organisation managing environmental requirements
– Experience in writing consultant briefs and reviewing environmental reports and documents
– Experience working in the road construction industry.
