At Thomastown West Primary School, our motto is "Together Working on Pathways to Success." We believe students reach their full potential when they are happy, healthy, and safe. Our objective is to help every child achieve academic and social success by providing an inclusive and innovative learning environment. Our mission is to be a caring learning community committed to maintaining a positive and supportive atmosphere for every student.
At our school:
Established in 1971, Thomastown West Primary School is located about 20 kilometres north of Melbourne's CBD. After the school was rebuilt in 2011, our classroom facilities offer the opportunity for traditional and flexible learning spaces and 21st Century Learning. Currently there are 202 students enrolled. A high proportion of students have English as an Additional Language, and 3% of students identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. These students are supported through our Koorie Literacy and Numeracy Program. Our school¿s diversity and inclusion are among our greatest strengths.
The school has 23 staff members, including part-time roles. This included the Principal, Assistant Principal, Leading Teacher, Learning Specialist, classroom teachers, a tutor, and a Koorie Literacy and Numeracy Program teacher. Our non-teaching team includes office staff, integration aides, a part-time wellbeing volunteer, and a Disability Inclusion Coordinator.
Thomastown West has prioritised the development of a comprehensive Student Engagement and Wellbeing Framework, underpinned by the School-Wide Positive Behaviour, Respectful Relationships and the Berry Street Educational Model. This work is further enhanced through our participation in the Mental Health in Primary Schools (MHiPS) pilot, and the `Side by Side¿ collaboration between VACCA and Berry Street.
We have an active parent group that meets regularly to support school events and fundraising. We also run a Breakfast Club free of charge to families that begins from 7:45 am in our Community Hub, at no cost to our families, helping supplement the outside of school hours care options for families. TheirCare is our after school hours program
Our school continues to implement its¿ strategic direction with a significant focus on improving Literacy, Numeracy and Student Agency. The successfully implementation of PLCs continue to improve student achievement. Increasing student attendance will continue to be a priority for Thomastown West. Each day 2 hours of Literacy is taught, and 5 hours of Numeracy every week. Our specialist subjects include Performing Arts, Visual Arts, STEM and Physical Education. Our AUSLAN program is immersed throughout all programs and classrooms within the school. A major feature of the Prep program is Oral Language. We also offer programs that extend and enhance student's abilities, such as Maths Olympiad. We also have specialised music programs such as instrumental lessons, choir and a school band.
We have a well-established Community Hub and a strong relationship with our community partners: Whittlesea Community Connections, The Smith Family and Reservoir and Preston Adult Community Education (PRACE). The purpose of the Hub is to support the needs of families and students in the Thomastown West Community.
