Leading teachers will be highly skilled classroom practitioners and undertake leadership and management roles commensurate with their salary range. The role of leading teachers is to improve the skill, knowledge and performance of the teaching workforce in a school or group of schools and to improve the curriculum program of a school.
Typically, leading teachers are responsible for coordinating a number of staff to achieve improvements in teaching and learning which may involve the coordination and professional support of colleagues through modelling, collaborating and coaching and using processes that develop knowledge, practice and professional engagement in others.
Leading teachers are expected to lead and manage a significant area or function within the school with a high degree of independence to ensure the effective development, provision and evaluation of the school's education program.
Leading teachers will be expected to make a significant contribution to policy development relating to teaching and learning in the school. A leading teacher has a direct impact and influence on the achievement of the school goals.
Leading teachers are usually responsible for the implementation of one or more priorities contained in the school strategic plan.
Operating in collaboration with their school, leadership and wellbeing team where relevant, the Student Wellbeing and Support Leader will:
Teachers currently registered or eligible for registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching and qualified to teach and/or have demonstrated experience in the curriculum area(s) specified for the position.

The Student Wellbeing & Support Leader will play a critical role in creating and sustaining a school environment that brings our vision and values to life. As a leader of restorative culture , philosophy and inclusive education, they will have the unique opportunity to lead two distinct areas of wellbeing in our new school. In the role of Mental Health and Wellbeing leadership, the implementation of a whole school approach to mental health and wellbeing is the priority. In the role of Disability Inclusion leadership, the establishment of the school disability inclusion structures and processes will form the second priority. As a key member of the Wellbeing and School Improvement Team, building the school¿s capacity to support students¿ mental health and wellbeing needs will be achieved through a full time out of classroom position.
Mental Health and Wellbeing
The Mental Health and Wellbeing role within this position provides a proactive focus for the promotion and prevention of mental health and wellbeing through assessment and implementation of context-relevant programs, approaches and initiatives based on a broad and extensive knowledge of the needs of the school.
The Mental Health and Wellbeing Leader role is not a clinical role and is not designed for direct intervention. The role is seen as a key conduit in creating referral pathways once a teacher or other staff member identifies a concern in the classroom.
Mental Health and Wellbeing Leaders are provided training in mental health literacy, supporting emerging needs, and building school capacity and receive ongoing support and professional development through structured and regular Learning Communities. Training is developed and facilitated by the Faculty of Education at University of Melbourne, supported by Murdoch Children¿s Research Institute.
Disability Inclusion
The Disability Inclusion (DI) role within this position will see the establishment of efficient operational structures and processes to support DI applications and funding management. This requires extensive expertise and understanding of inclusive practices and needs of students to support students, staff and families in achieving best outcomes. As a founding member of the Wellbeing Team, working with leaders and teachers to establish a positive, restorative and supportive school environment from the classroom out will be seen through relationship building and proactive response to problem solving and student challenges.
