The Solicitor contributes to the delivery of priorities across the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action by providing legal and legislative support on a broad range of subject matters with a focus on teamwork and delivery of legislative and regulatory reform projects. The subject matters include administrative law, agriculture, corporate governance, Crown land use and development, energy and resources law, environmental and climate action law, water, fire and emergency management, First Nations self-determination reform, natural resource management, and statutory interpretation. The nature of the legal and legislative issues varies in scope and complexity.
The position requires a law graduate on their path to becoming a qualified lawyer or already admitted to legal practice, ideally with some exposure to government policy and legislative frameworks and the process for developing bills and regulations, and with experience in project management, problem solving, and the ability to provide clear, accurate and timely advice. Once admitted the duties are carried out as a lawyer under supervision.
