ABOUT THE POSITION:
This position is accountable for designing, developing, procuring, installing and maintaining exhibition lighting, technical infrastructure and electrical lighting system control in designated galleries, touring exhibitions and public areas, as well as providing lighting and electrical support for multiple stakeholders across the organisation.
Some of the key duties include:
- Design, develop and manage the implementation of exhibition lighting and electrical control systems in object sensitive areas which meet the needs of a broad range of stakeholders across Museums Victoria.
- Work and collaborate within core Exhibition teams to design, plan, specify, implement and maintain exhibition lighting of permanent, temporary and touring exhibitions, and in collaboration with Conservation to ensure lighting designs meet international and Australian Museum Conservation Standards whilst maintaining sustainable practices.
- Ensure the realisation of technical project briefs and contribute to the other technical requirements of museum projects as required.
- Specify and document all stages of the lighting design process including CAD lighting and electrical plans, preliminary design and if required 3D renderings or sketches of project briefs and prepare documentation for the procurement and scheduling of required works.
- Supervise and lead technical services staff and contractors to ensure project delivery within the exhibition deadlines and budgets.
- Play a lead role in the realisation of the Museums Victoria strategic plan through the development and maintenance of partnerships with key stakeholders, including designers, developers and producers, so as to ensure project milestones are met. Ensure operational upkeep of designated gallery spaces including documentation, scheduling, procurement, repairs and reinterpretation of ageing technologies.
- Working with relevant organisational teams, lead the procurement and acquittal of technical resources to realise the technical brief of projects. Monitor expenditure and provide reporting on asset registration, budgeting, and resource allocation.
- Provide and ensure Building Code of Australia (BCA) and Australian Standard photometric readings and illumination levels are delivered, maintained, and provided for certification.
- Facilitate and supervise technical work teams, including casuals and contractors, as part of installation, operational maintenance or de-installation of projects.
- Develop exhibition and gallery support and maintenance documentation (via helpdesk or similar) for the exhibition, experience or project.
- Prepare OH&S documentation and procedures necessary for the safe installation, de installation and operation of technical works so as to ensure a safe work environment.
- Provide expert advice about lighting design, lighting levels and latest advances in equipment and evolving technologies with key stakeholders, including designers, developers and producers.
Comply with Museums Victoria's policies and procedures and with relevant legislation and regulations
The successful applicant will have:
- Demonstrated experience in the preparation of exhibition lighting and electrical specification briefs and the design and implementation of exhibition lighting systems for exhibition projects.
- Demonstrated experience and ability to read and interpret Building plans, specifications and contract documentation.
- Demonstrated experience in specialized lighting for exhibition and theatre environments and knowledge of electrical and lighting control systems.
- Wide-ranging experience in exhibition systems and processes, including knowledge of specialised lighting installation, show control systems, production, computer control technologies and their application in exhibition and theatrical environments and variety of public applications.
- Understand lighting levels required to display various Objects within conservation guidelines and practices
- Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to liaise with and advise staff at all levels and work co-operatively in a team environment.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the latest OH&S and site safety practices and experience working on an exhibition or theatrical construction site.
- Demonstrated experience in initiating and leading technical projects including demonstrated experience in supervising staff and contractors as well as coordinating budgets.
- Sound research and documentation skills that have been applied to the specification of specialised lighting equipment and designs. Relevant experience in contribution to maintenance and operational documentation.
- A results oriented attitude and ability to work to tight deadlines with minimal supervision
- A sound knowledge of current trends and developments, including sustainability, within the exhibition and affiliated industries. An established network of industry related contacts is desirable.
OTHER INFORMATION
This role is an Ongoing, Full-Time position. The salary on offer is $84,166 pro rata + 11.5% Superannuation.
