About the opportunity
Join Energy Safe Victoria's Legal and Procurement Department and play a pivotal role in supporting strong regulatory outcomes for Victorians. As a Senior Solicitor – Enforcement, you will work closely with investigators and field staff to provide strategic legal advice, support complex investigations, and lead enforcement action, including prosecutions.
Reporting to the Prosecutions Manager, you'll deliver practical, high-quality legal guidance on the exercise of regulatory powers and contribute to matters that have a direct impact on public safety. What you'll contribute
- Assess and advise on enforcement matters, reviewing briefs of evidence and working closely with investigators to support effective regulatory outcomes.
- Provide expert legal advice on complex regulatory, criminal, administrative, and enforcement issues.
- Lead and conduct prosecutions, civil proceedings, appeals, and tribunal matters on behalf of Energy Safe Victoria.
- Prepare court and tribunal documents, manage litigation processes, and coordinate key stakeholders throughout proceedings.
- Undertake reviews of infringement notices and other administrative decisions.
- Deliver strategic legal advice and recommendations to senior leaders, the Executive, and the Commission.
- Contribute to regulatory reform, policy development, and legislative initiatives across the organisation.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with regulators, industry representatives, government agencies, and other key stakeholders.
- Champion high standards of legal governance, professional ethics, and compliance.
- Mentor and support junior legal team members, fostering capability and knowledge sharing.
- Provide advice on enforcement-related matters, statutory requests, administrative decisions, and public-facing communications.
- Support broader legal and regulatory projects as required.
To be successful, you'll have
- Relevant tertiary qualifications in Law and admitted to practice as an Australian Lawyer.
- Hold or be eligible to hold a current Practising Certificate in Victoria
- Proven experience in prosecutions, litigation, advocacy, or regulatory enforcement.
- Strong knowledge of criminal law, evidence, court procedures, and administrative decision-making.
- Experience managing complex legal matters and appearing before courts and tribunals.
- The ability to provide practical, strategic legal advice to support business and regulatory outcomes.
- Exceptional communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to influence and advise senior leaders.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making capabilities.
- Excellent organisational skills with the ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience conducting reviews of infringement notices and administrative decisions.
