The Department of Justice and Community Safety is seeking aSenior Project and Policy Officer within our Aboriginal Justice Group.
This is a prioritised role for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples, who will be given priority consideration as per the special measures provision of the Equal Opportunity Act 2010.
About the Business Unit
The Aboriginal Justice Group is committed to driving systemic change in the justice system, to deliver better outcomes for Aboriginal Victorians. The group works in close partnership with Victorian Aboriginal communities and is guided by principles of Aboriginal self-determination.
The Aboriginal Partnerships and Programs division consists of the Office of the Executive Director, Koori Justice Unit (KJU) and the Stolen Generations Reparations Unit (SGRU).
The KJU is responsible for the stewardship, coordination, and implementation of the Aboriginal Justice Agreement, a formal partnership with Aboriginal communities to reduce Aboriginal over-representation and improve justice outcomes KJU provides coordination and support to the Aboriginal Justice Forum (AJF), the Regional Aboriginal Justice Committees (RAJACs), the Local Aboriginal Justice Committees (LAJACs) and associated partnership mechanisms, to deliver on the goals of the AJA. It is responsible for leading effective engagement with the department's key Aboriginal partnership, the Aboriginal Justice Caucus, and other Aboriginal stakeholders.
The SGRU was established to implement the Reparations Package to help address the trauma and suffering caused by the forced removal of Aboriginal children from their families, culture and Country.
About the role:
The Senior Project and Policy Officer provides strategic policy and program leadership to support the Executive Director, Aboriginal Partnerships & Programs. The role is responsible for delivering high-level policy advice, driving strategic initiatives, and ensuring Aboriginal self-determination is embedded across departmental programs, services, and decision-making processes.
Operating with a high degree of autonomy, the position leads the coordination and implementation of regional engagement a ctivities and projects that strengthen partnerships with Victorian Aboriginal communities, organisations, and stakeholders. The role works collaboratively with senior executives, policy teams, and program areas to deliver initiatives that contribute to improved justice, social, and community outcomes for Aboriginal Victorians.
