What you will do
The role of the Senior Policy Officer is to provide critical analysis and input into projects, policies and DJCS reforms, particularly those that impact Victoria Police or community safety. This role requires someone with exceptional written communication skills, a keen strategic and analytical mind and the ability to work cross-functionally with stakeholders to manage complex pieces of work.
You will provide advice on complex issues, legislation and government reform.
You will:
- provide high-quality and timely advice to senior stakeholders including the Police and Community Safety Executive Leadership Team and the Deputy Secretary, Community Safety, Victims and Racing
- develop and manage positive relationships with key senior stakeholders including senior executives across the public service
- shape and deliver specific projects to ensure sound and timely outcomes aligned to PPCP policy objectives and strategic priorities
- review and analyse financial information, and preparing business cases and funding submissions
- lead the development of new policy proposals and providing strategic input into DJCS and Government reform projects relevant to the team's work priorities
- manage a diverse work portfolio that covers issues including Victoria Police finance, resourcing, capital works, mental health, entitlements, industrial powers and other emerging topics as required
About you
Completion of a relevant tertiary qualification public policy, public administration or law is desirable.
You should have sound knowledge of government policy making, including Cabinet and Parliamentary processes.
You should also have:
- Demonstrate strong conceptual and analytical skills with a particular ability to develop strategic policy frameworks, devise plans and develop new initiatives that effectively address strategic, issues and operational requirements
- Work autonomously and with limited direction and be comfortable engaging with senior leaders and stakeholders, including the Executive Director – Police and Community Safety, and the Office of the Deputy Secretary – Police, Racing, Victims and Coordination
- Analyse and understand financial information and provide strategic advice on budget and finance issues affecting Victoria Police
- Provide high-quality, timely and evidence-based strategic advice, even when faced with time pressures and limited information; and
- Contribute to and build a strong team and business unit culture
