About the Business Unit:
The Sentencing Advisory Council (‘the Council') is an independent statutory body that provides evidence-based advice, research and data about sentencing policy and practice in Victoria.
In May 2026, the Victorian Government announced that the Council would be undertaking a review of the Sentencing Act 1991 (‘the review'). This role will lead the Council's review, one of the most significant sentencing law reform... projects in Victoria in recent years.
About the Role:
Reporting to the CEO, the Senior Manager, Legal Policy is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the review, including the development of high-quality publications, managing legal policy staff, and leading engagement with stakeholders such as the judiciary, government, the legal profession, victims of crime, marginalised communities and the general public. The Senior Manager, Legal Policy will also contribute to shaping the strategic direction of the organisation as a member of the management team.
This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to a major law reform. project and influence sentencing policy and practice in Victoria.
Some of your duties will include:
Provide authoritative and strategic legal policy advice to the Council's CEO and Board of Directors on sentencing law and reform.
Lead the delivery of the Sentencing Act review - including planning, consultation and final reporting - ensuring outputs are high-quality, evidence-based and delivered on time
Oversee the development of publications, such as issues papers, options papers and reports

About You:
As our ideal candidate, you will possess:
Extensive knowledge of criminal law, with a strong focus on sentencing law
Demonstrated experience leading complex legal or policy projects to timely completion
Outstanding written communication skills, including experience producing high-quality reports
