About Us:
- Are you interested in being at the cutting edge of legislation and policy development for high profile criminal, human rights or civil law reforms? If so, consider applying to join us in the Courts, Civil and Criminal Law Group (CCCL).
- We provide legal policy and reform expertise to the Attorney-General to deliver on their civil and criminal law policy responsibilities and the legislative reform program.
- We work collaboratively with key entities across the justice system and the department to ensure policy reform is strategic, relevant, holistic and people-centred.
- We are responsible for developing policy and legislative reform in a broad range of areas, including bail, summary crime, counter-terrorism, family violence, offence reform (including sexual offences), sentencing, criminal procedure (e.g. committal and appeal processes), jury directions and evidence, We are also responsible for human rights and equal opportunity law, civil evidence and procedure, negligence, open courts, property, succession law, worker screening, guardianship and administration law, elder abuse and policy relating to supported decision-making.
About the Role:
The Senior Legal Policy Officer is responsible for the co-ordination, development, implementation, review and reform of policy and legislation across the Attorney-General's portfolio, whilst providing considered, informed and authoritative advice to the senior executives and government on key policy and legislation issues and system reform issues. You will be joining an inclusive and supportive group and will be provided with a range of training and development opportunities.
About You:
As our ideal candidate you will:
- have legal policy and/or relevant legal practice experience, preferably in criminal law, with the ability to analyse complex policy and/or legal issues, interpret legislation and provide accurate legal solutions
- be resilient, flexible and adaptable to changing priorities
- be an excellent communicator, both in writing and orally
- have the ability to understand and take into account the priorities of various groups and individuals when developing options for responding to policy problems, and
- be a strategic thinker.
Qualifications/Requirements:
- A relevant tertiary qualification in Law is required.
