The Commission is an independent statutory body that promotes improvement in policies and practices affecting the safety and wellbeing of Victorian children and young people. It has a particular focus on vulnerable children and young people. The Commission is also the regulator for the Child Safe Standards and the Reportable Conduct Scheme.
The Commission is headed by the Principal Commissioner. There is currently an Acting Principal Commissioner.
Please note that the Victorian Government has announced that the Reportable Conduct and Child Safe Standards functions will transfer from the Commission for Children and Young People to the Social Services Regulator. Whilst recruitment to this role will commence at the Commission for Children and Young People, it is anticipated that the role may be transferred to the Social Services Regulator in early 2026.
The Senior Legal Officer is part of the Legal Services team and is primarily focused on the Commission's regulatory functions (Reportable Conduct Scheme (RCS) and Child Safe Standards (CSS)). The Senior Legal Officer provides legal advice and services to the Commission on regulatory matters relating to the RCS and CSS including investigations under the RCS, information sharing, compliance and enforcement for both CSS and RCS, VCAT reviews and litigation, privacy and FOI Act. This role may also provide other legal advice and services within the Commission. At times this position requires engagement with challenging and confronting subject matter. This role will best suit a candidate who is resilient, empathetic, a team player and able to work in a fast-paced environment.
In this role you will:
- Provide advice on complex legal issues primarily related to the Commission's regulatory functions
- Identify, analyse, raise awareness of and respond to emerging issues and areas of risk
- Develop and maintain relationships with co-regulators and other legal and law enforcement staff and professionals

- Strong problem-solving and written and verbal communication skills
- Experience in an area related to the safety and wellbeing of children and young people
- A current Australian practicing certificate which entitles practice in Victoria as an employee of a legal practice
