About the role
The Magistrates' Court of Victoria is seeking a highly experienced and motivated Senior Lawyer to provide expert legal support to Magistrates and Judicial Registrars. This role is central to driving legal excellence, policy development, and continuous improvement across the Court. The Senior Lawyer contributes to the operation and continuous improvement of the Magistrates' Court by supporting Magistrates and Judicial Registrars with a range of legal work including advice and legal research, law reform and legislative policy analysis, and supporting ad hoc and special projects.
As a Senior Lawyer, you will:
• Deliver high-level legal and policy advice on complex and sensitive matters.
• Conduct advanced legal research and statutory interpretation.
• Draft legal documents including memoranda, briefs, and background papers.
• Lead and manage complex legal projects with minimal supervision.
• Provide expertise in privacy, data protection, FOI, and human rights.
• Mentor junior legal staff and contribute to professional development initiatives.
• Collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders.

About you
You will bring:
• Post-admission experience in private practice and/or government.
• Strong statutory interpretation and legal analysis skills.
• Advanced knowledge of Magistrates' Court practices and procedures (highly desirable).
• Excellent communication, negotiation, and stakeholder engagement capabilities.
• Proven ability to manage complex legal projects and deliver quality outcomes.
• Highly developed legal research and analytical skills.
• Advanced proficiency in the delivery of well-reasoned legal analysis and opinion on complex and technical legal matters
