ABOUT THE POSITION:
The Senior Graphic Designer, Retail leads the creative direction of the Museums Victoria retail product offering across Melbourne Museum, Immigration Museum, Scienceworks and online. The role focuses on utilising museum assets and commercial trend research to develop cohesive, audience-focused product ranges across product, packaging and point of sale.
The position is accountable for designing exhibition and everyday Museums Victoria exclusive ranges, delivering strong creative concepts that balance commercial outcomes with dedicated timelines.
Some of the key duties include:
- Undertake highly advanced and creative design work for commercially viable retail products at Museums Victoria, using innovative thinking.
- Work closely with the Product Manager to develop creative outputs from briefs, commercially interpreting trends, exhibition content, Museums Victoria content and collections for existing and new product lines.
- Liaise and collaborate with Museums Victoria suppliers, providing artwork in required formats and understanding technical requirements for application to product.
- Prepare and present concepts and designs for approval, ensuring alignment with strategic directions, briefs, value proposition and merchandising capabilities.
- Utilise internal museum assets as creative inspiration, with consideration of copyright limitations.
- Assist in the development of a Museums Victoria Retail visual and brand identity across products, packaging, display units and other retail assets.
- Work within Museums Victoria brand guidelines to ensure consistent and appropriate branding.
- Engage in business analysis to support understanding of sales and profit results and inform future direction.
- Use communication design expertise to clearly convey concepts and original ideas to colleagues, suppliers and external stakeholders.
- Liaise with the Museums Victoria Design Team to stay informed on exhibitions, events, activities and branding developments.
- Adhere to in-house electronic design management systems and provide production management support as required.
- Identify, commission and manage external contractors, and comply with Museums Victoria policies, procedures and relevant legislation.
The successful applicant will have:
- Demonstrated knowledge of the role of design in a retail or wholesale environment, with an understanding of customer aspiration.
- Proven experience working in a retail or wholesale design environment, with a strong record of success.
- High-level expertise in Communication Design, including advanced conceptual, spatial and creative skills across a range of product categories.
- Demonstrated experience working with retail suppliers to develop and align products with specific branding.
- The ability to meet deadlines under pressure and within short timeframes.
- Sound knowledge and understanding of retail manufacturing processes.
- Strong collaborative skills, with the ability to work effectively within teams and across departments.
- Proven experience communicating design ideas through concept visuals, sketches, renderings, mock-ups and presentations for sign-off.
- Highly developed skills in Adobe Creative Suite, particularly InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop, and experience using project management software.
- Highly developed communication, interpersonal, project management and organisational skills, including experience managing external consultants and contractors.
OTHER INFORMATION
This role is full time, fixed term position for 12 months. The salary on offer is VPS4.1 base of grade - $97,955 per annum + 12% Superannuation.
The successful applicant is required to undergo a National Police Records Check and Working with Children Check and be assessed as suitable (new employees are required to meet this cost).
