The Game Management Authority (GMA) delivers programs to improve and promote sustainable and responsible game hunting in Victoria. The GMA is responsible for
issuing Game Licence’s and related testing; managing open and closed seasons for game species; enforcing game hunting laws and acting against those who do not hunt legally; and educating and informing game hunters on how to hunt legally and responsibly in Victoria.
The GMA has an important role in managing natural resources across Victoria addressing: The sustainable harvest of game species; the humane treatment of animals that are hunted and used in game hunting and minimising any negative impacts on non-game wildlife, including protected and threatened species and the conservation of wildlife habitats and providing advice to government on game management matters.

The Role
As a Senior Game Officer (SGO), you will deliver high quality community-centred game hunting compliance services within a state segment (Eastern or Western Victoria), while also contributing to state-wide service delivery. SGOs actively contribute to the development and implementation of appropriate enforcement, education, engagement, and other strategies in accordance with whole of organisational objectives and priorities, to maximise compliance.
SGOs engage with a variety of stakeholders, including licence holders, government, and community groups, and manage their own work programs, under broad direction from the Team Leader, to ensure effective and timely service delivery. SGOs work collaboratively in small regionally based teams and actively contribute and support programs and projects across the broader organisation.
Key accountabilities include:
- As a member of a regional compliance team, deliver game compliance services across the compliance spectrum to the regional community as part of the broader state-wide compliance program.
- Maintain good working relationships with community stakeholders and partner agencies, including Victoria Police, Parks Victoria, Victorian Fisheries Authority, Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA) and Traditional Owner Corporations.
- Provide advice and educational services, making presentations at stakeholder meetings/gatherings, and attending relevant shows and exhibitions.
- Assist with the delivery of Game Licence testing and services as required and actively contribute to game research programs.
- Contribute to the review and development of standard operating procedures, business rules, plans, strategies and protocols as they relate to regional and state-wide game compliance.
- Support and assist the Director, Compliance and Intelligence and Team Leaders to manage local, regional and state-wide compliance and intelligence operations, including budgets and other administrative duties such as brief writing and the preparation of rosters, compliance plans, information, fact sheets and educational materials.
- Undertake in-field compliance activities, such as executing warrants, conducting patrols, undertaking investigations and interviewing persons of interest, in a safe, competent and respectful manner.
- Assist the Team Leader with the delivery of training and mentoring for staff, including capability building and operational coordination. and provide input to the development of policy, regulations and legislation.
- Actively promote a culture of positive workplace behaviour and give focus to building a functioning, resilient and positive team within the GMA.
- Having regard to the size of the GMA, all staff will be expected to undertake a range of other activities, as required, in addition to those included in this position description.

- Highly developed interpersonal skills and sound judgement. The ability to assess the situation and make appropriate and informed decisions, particularly in potentially volatile situations. This includes being able to utilise own skills, knowledge and experience to enable the best outcomes for the individual, the community, other stakeholders and the organisation.

- Ability to clearly and confidently communicate with all people at all levels in the organisation and the community. Well-developed interpersonal skills with experience using feedback to refine communication and ensure communications are understood, including understanding and meeting the needs of the target audience. This role also requires an ability to handle difficult situations and sensitive information.
- Proven planning and organisational experience where clearly defined objectives and priorities are set, with the ability to anticipate barriers and find effective ways to deal with those. Important to the role is the requirement to delegate responsibilities to ensure goals are met whilst also liaising with others when organising work priorities.
- Strong problem-solving experience liaising with key stakeholders to ensure understanding of issues and the ability to adopt a conceptual and analytical approach. This role requires a demonstrated ability to anticipate potential problems, pre-empt required actions, evaluate implemented courses of action and adjust as required.
- Strong team work is crucial in this role along with a highly developed sense of interpersonal awareness, flexibility and adaptability; demonstrated respect and support for others including constructive workplace behaviours is also very important.
- Desired Experience/Qualifications:
- Successfully completed a current Client Interaction, Defensive Tactics (CIDT2) training or equivalent
- A relevant tertiary qualification or relevant experience in natural resource management, ideally with experience in game or wildlife management
- An industry recognised qualification in law enforcement practices and procedures
