About the role
Fixed Term until September 2026
The Senior Communications and Engagement Advisor play a pivotal role in shaping how DTP’s planning and development projects are communicated to communities and stakeholders. This position will lead the design and delivery of communication and engagement strategies for major initiatives, including the Activity Centres Program, supporting the delivery of more housing close to jobs, transport and services.
Working closely with project teams and the External Relations Manager, you’ll provide high-level strategic advice, develop communications and engagement plans, manage risk and reputation issues, and deliver creative, inclusive campaigns that connect with diverse communities — particularly multicultural audiences.
You’ll also provide advice and content for stakeholder relations and for the Victorian Planning Authority within DTP, supporting alignment with departmental priorities.

Key selection criteria
To be successful in this role, the ideal candidate will demonstrate extensive experience in developing and implementing communications and community engagement strategies for complex or high-profile projects. You’ll bring a strong understanding of IAP2 principles, proven stakeholder management skills, and the ability to communicate with clarity, confidence and impact across diverse audiences.
On a personal level, the successful applicant will be a collaborative, adaptable communicator who thrives in a fast-paced environment. You’ll be proactive, politically astute and passionate about meaningful engagement that builds understanding and trust between government and community.
Position accountabilities
Qualifications and experience
A tertiary qualification in communications, public relations or a related field is required, along with extensive experience applying IAP2 methodologies and principles. Experience working in or with government on strategic engagement and communications projects will be highly regarded.
