The Senior Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Assessment Officer provides expert advice, leadership and strategic support to ensure culturally sensitive, legally compliant Aboriginal cultural heritage assessments across Parks Victoria. The role works closely with Traditional Owners, Registered Aboriginal Parties and internal stakeholders to protect and conserve Aboriginal cultural heritage, strengthen organisational capability and drive continuous improvement
- Make a meaningful impact - Play a key role in protecting and conserving Aboriginal cultural heritage across Victoria's parks and reserves. This role provides the opportunity to influence significant projects, support Aboriginal self-determination, and contribute to culturally informed decision-making across Parks Victoria
- Work in partnership with Traditional Owners - Build strong, respectful relationships with Traditional Owners and Registered Aboriginal Parties, supporting culturally appropriate engagement and collaborative approaches to cultural heritage management.
- Senior specialist role - Use your expertise to lead complex Aboriginal cultural heritage assessments, provide trusted advice across the organisation, and contribute to the development of policies, processes and best practice approaches.
About the Role
As the Senior Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Assessment Officer, you will provide specialist advice and leadership to support the protection and management of Aboriginal cultural heritage across Parks Victoria. You will oversee complex cultural heritage assessments, provide expert guidance on legislative compliance, work closely with Traditional Owners and Registered Aboriginal Parties, and support staff delivering projects and programs across the state.
Reporting to the Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Assessment Manager, you will play an important role in driving continuous improvement, strengthening organisational capability, and ensuring culturally safe and legally compliant approaches to cultural heritage management.

The Aboriginal Engagement and Partnerships Division provides strategic direction and culturally informed advice to support Parks Victoria's partnerships with Traditional Owners and advance Aboriginal self-determination. We are a collaborative, values-driven team committed to protecting Aboriginal cultural heritage, building strong relationships, supporting cultural safety, and delivering positive outcomes for Traditional Owners and the Victorian community.
We're Looking for Someone With
- Demonstrated expertise in the Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006 and associated regulations.
- Experience managing complex Aboriginal cultural heritage assessments and compliance requirements.
- Strong stakeholder engagement skills and experience working with Traditional Owners and Registered Aboriginal Parties.
- Proven ability to navigate complex issues and identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
- Tertiary qualifications in Aboriginal cultural heritage, archaeology, anthropology, environmental management, natural resource management, planning, law or a related discipline would be highly regarded.
