The assistant principal reports directly to the principal.
Assistant principals have a primary responsibility for the management of significant areas or functions within the school to ensure the effective development, provision and evaluation of the school's education program. In exercising the responsibility, assistant principals will have the authority to make all significant decisions relating to the program, budget and staff relating to their area of designated responsibility within the framework of the school's strategic plan, policies and budget. Assistant principals will contribute to the overall management of the school through involvement in policy formulation and decision making.
The management of significant school program or functional areas in schools involve assistant principals in the analysis of the needs of students and the translation of state educational policy and frameworks into appropriate education programs to meet the needs of all students.
Typically assistant principals will be responsible for the effective use of the teaching staff and program budget of a defined area of the school's operation and for the oversight and leadership of the educational programs provided utilising these resources.
Typically, assistant principals perform one or more of the following functions:

Traralgon (Kosciuszko St) Primary School is located at the west end of Traralgon, the Latrobe Valley¿s largest town, 160 km southeast of Melbourne. The school, known locally as Kossie, offers 320 students an attractive, safe, and settled environment with spacious grounds. The school has 44 staff members: 2 Principal-class, 16 Classroom Teachers (a mix of full time & part time), and 5 Specialist Teachers (a mix of part-time positions), 14 Classroom-based Education Support Staff, 1 Student Welfare-focused Education Support staff, 2 Teaching Support Staff 1 Literacy Intervention Education Support Staff, and 3 Office-based Education Support Staff. During 2026, the structure is comprised of fourteen classes, specialist Physical Education, Science, Digital Technologies, and Visual Arts. Students are predominantly from the immediate neighbourhood. There are 3 Learning Specialists, 2 of which have a focus on student learning and building consistent high-quality practices, while the other is leading Inclusion and Disability. Kossie has developed a comprehensive approach to student well-being through the development of our School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support Program (SWPBS). Students are explicitly taught appropriate behaviours and how to self-regulate. Our school takes pride in our four values: Be Respectful, Be Resilient, Be Ready, and Be Responsible.
