The Department of Justice and Community Safety (the department) is seeking 2x Safety Coordinator, to provide a critical role within Safety Wellbeing and Compliance.
About the Business Unit
People, Safety, Culture and Communications' (PSCCs) core functions span the breadth of workplace cultural and people matters, including human resource policy and strategy; organisational culture and change; recruitment, redeployment, and retention; performance and development; pay, benefits and workforce reporting; occupational health and safety management; and employment regulations.
The Safety Coordinator sits within Safety, Wellbeing and Compliance (SWC), a branch of the PSCC in the Department of Justice and Community Safety (the department). The SWC branch provides process, systems, and services to support the department to meet its responsibilities under health and safety laws (Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004, Dangerous Goods Act 1985 and Workplace Injury Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 2013).
The department is responsible for the statutory supervision of young people in the criminal justice system.
The three Youth Justice Custodial Precincts in Victoria are managed by the department. The Parkville Youth Justice Precinct is a 180-bed facility and is in the inner northern Melbourne suburb of Parkville. Cherry Creek youth justice precinct is a 140-bed facility to the west of Werribee. Malmsbury Youth Justice Precinct is a 30-bed facility in the outer northwest. Youth justice precincts accommodate young people aged 10-18 years who have been remanded or sentenced by the Criminal Division of the Children's Court, and some 18–21-year-olds sentenced by Adult Courts to a youth justice custodial sentence.
Youth Justice Custodial Services aim to engage young people in change by addressing their offending behaviour and equipping them with the skills required for positive community participation, within a safe and secure environment.
About the Role
As the Safety Coordinator you will provide support to the Safety Manager to partner with the operational teams by coordinating, supporting and monitoring Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) within the Youth Justice facility. The primary purpose of this role is to promote safety in a collaborative and informative manner. You will work alongside Youth Justice staff to educate them on all safety matters including occupational violence, slips trips and falls, manual handling and psychosocial hazar ds.
You will work collaboratively with a range of internal and external stakeholders to implement and drive the existing safety management system providing guidance and advice at the operational and tactical level to develop and deliver operational safety excellence in partnership with managers, supervisors, Health and Safety Representatives (HSRs) and staff to maximise the effectiveness of the safety management system.
The Safety Coordinator will work in partnership with a range of safety and wellbeing stakeholders under the leadership Safety Manager with a focus upon driving improved safety outcomes, through proactive preventative health and safety strategies, to address safety risks to youth justice workers.
