Alexandra District Health (ADH) is seeking a high-quality Rural Generalist, a General Practitioner with advanced rural skills for a part-time role. The role is ideally suited to a rural generalist anaesthetist (GP anaesthetist), ADH also has an exciting opportunity for a rural generalist with an interest in emergency care and development of specific interest in rural geriatric care looking to innovate models of active aging well, primary care support and frailty prevention. We are looking for candidates who enjoy clinical work but who also want to develop other skill sets related to rural primary care, and education.

About the Practicing Location and the Vision:
The hospital, situated in the historic and beautiful town of Alexandra Victoria, is surrounded by rolling farmland, and near picturesque Lake Eildon. Located north of and not far distant to the Yarra Valley, ADH is a location to practice as a rural generalist, and still be within reasonable travel of enjoying the benefits of metropolitan Melbourne. ADH is seeking high quality candidates who aspire to contribute to building a community of practice around Alexandra and surrounds.
The setting is simply stunning, combining the attractions of the Lake Eildon, the Goulburn River, fly fishing, mountain biking, camping, boating, views across valleys and the Cathedral Ranges, a destination for climbers. Surrounded by lush grazing land, farms, hydro-infrastructure and the timber industry come together making “Alex” a hub of the community.
The Eastern Metropolitan and Murrundindi Local Health Service Network
The health service is a partner in the East Metropolitan and Murrundindi Local Health Service Network. (EMM LSHN). Comprising Alexandra District Health, Eastern Health, St Vincent’s Hospital and Yea District Memorial Hospital; the partnership has commenced oncology services at ADH, delivered as an outreach service from Eastern Health, and ADH visiting specialists provide a variety of services.
About the applicant:
The suitable candidate will be a Fellow of either the Royal Australian College General Practitioners (FRACGP) or the Australian College of Rural and Remote Medicine (FACRRM). Advanced trainees of either Medical College. Applicants who have completed their RG-Anaesthesia training and are substantively progressed towards completion of FACRRM or FRACGP (rural) may be considered.
The Rural Generalist Practitioner (GP) must also be interested in working with the community and support local primary care initiatives. If relocating to the area and not already engaged in community general practice, there may be opportunities provided to join established local and nearby rural general practices.
About the offering, work, and workplace:
The offering is a 0.3 EFT appointment based at the Alexandra District Hospital (ADH). GP-anaesthetic services include perioperative services such as perioperative risk management and patient optimisation, services to general surgery, endoscopy, gynaecology, and for the right candidate, ophthalmic anaesthesia. ADH uses the Victorian Public Health Sector - Medical Specialists Enterprise Agreement 2022 – 2026 as the basis for its remuneration, rural incentives, continuing medical education (CME) support and workforce governance.

In the public hospital (ADH) setting the doctor will provide service to
- an onsite medical review clinic, reviewing post-urgent care or perioperative patients who require specific follow-up.
- ADH inpatients
- ADH perioperative services (for RG-Anaesthetists who are suitably qualified and experienced for this scope of practice)
- the Urgent Care Centre
- supporting continuity of care for patients in collaboration with local GP services
This is a public health service position, the doctor will be expected to participate in clinical governance activities, development of local policy, teaching and ultimately, to supervise GP or rural hospitalist trainee and support hospital employed career medical officers. Clinical governance activities include provision of the medical perspective on prioritization of safe patient care and high-quality patient outcomes, morbidity and mortality reviews, and when required, timely contribution to health service reviews under the Statutory Duty of Candour legislation.
Opportunities can be provided to work with other health services to develop expertise in subspecialties of interest. For example, assistance with placement or funding application for up-skilling or maintenance of clinical skills.
Alexandra District Health is a 23-bed inpatient service which averages 5 inpatients a day. It has an UCC which sees more than 3,500 presentations a year. Medical and Surgical specialists visit from Melbourne with the operating theatres running 5 days a fortnight. Anaesthesia is provided by local Rural Generalist Anaesthetists.
There is a collective enthusiasm to revitalize the general practice services locally available at Alexandra. An opportunity will be provided to link with an established and well-regarded local practice in the Shire and develop a private practice.
