About us
Court Services Victoria provides corporate services and facilities to support the performance of the judicial, quasi-judicial and administrative functions of Victoria's courts and tribunal, Judicial College and Judicial Commission. Collectively, Victoria's Supreme, County, Magistrates', Children's, and Coroners courts, the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (VCAT), the Judicial College of Victoria, the Judicial Commission of Victoria, and Court Services Victoria (CSV) are referred to as the ‘Courts Group'.
The Magistrates' Court of Victoria (MCV) is the first level of the Victorian court system and is a jurisdiction within the Court Services Victoria. It has a long history of providing justice for the people of Victoria in metropolitan and regional courts across the state. The Court determines in excess of 300,000 cases per annum at 51 locations, equating to approximately 90 percent of all cases that come before Victorian courts each year. The Court aims to be an innovative, accessible, and responsive court that provides quality services to the Victorian community.
About the role
Registrars of the Magistrates' Court play a vital role in supporting the effective operation of Court registries across Victoria. This dynamic position involves a broad range of administrative responsibilities, which may include in‑court duties as a bench clerk, assisting clients via telephone and counter enquiries, and managing various behind‑the‑scenes administrative tasks.
Registrars also exercise powers delegated under the Magistrates' Court Act 1989, as well as other relevant legislation and Rules. This includes preparing and processing statutory and administrative documentation, and using sound professional judgement to apply legislative requirements, established rules, precedents, and the Court's Practice Directions when performing quasi‑judicial and statutory functions.
A key part of the role involves working collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders, including judicial officers, Victoria Police, the Office of Public Prosecutions, legal practitioners, court user groups, and members of the public. Strong interpersonal skills and excellent verbal and written communication abilities are essential.
Registrars may also be required to support the operations of other courts within the region as needed. In addition, the role includes leadership responsibilities, such as supervising and developing small teams of Trainee Registrars and Registrars.
