THE ENHANCED CARE UNIT
The Enhanced Care Unit at Peter Mac is an innovative unit that provides high quality, specialised care for cancer patients requiring higher levels of monitoring and clinical support. The enhanced model of care is internationally recognised. Patients within the unit may require invasive and non-invasive continuous blood pressure monitoring, advanced haemodynamic support, continuous cardiac monitoring, high flow oxygen, complex fluid and medication infusions including noradrenaline, epidurals, or intrathecal opioids. The Enhanced Care Unit is a six-bed unit and is located at Peter MacCallum’s Parkville Campus.
THE PATIENTS
Peter Mac cares for patients with a complex array of cancer types that require treatments that are integrated and carefully planned. Treatments may involve several modalities such as medicines, surgery, radiotherapy and in more recent years the growth of immunotherapies have seen significant advances. As the treatments for cancer have advanced, we have seen increased complexity and acuity of care needs for our patients. The development of the Enhanced Care Unit is to ensure we continue to deliver world’s best cancer care that meets the needs of our patients.
THE TEAM
The Enhanced Care Unit includes a Nurse Unit Manager, Practice Development Nurse, Associate Nurse Unit Managers and Registered Nurses who work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to ensure safe and high-quality care for our patients. There is also a strong relationship with the Royal Melbourne Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit and the RMH Emergency Department to ensure patients are cared for in the most appropriate setting.
