Our people enable the Courts Group to deliver on each jurisdiction's own strategic priorities while also pursuing strategic opportunities that are interconnected and deliver benefits more broadly.
The Coroners Court plays a vital role in improving the health and safety of the Victorian community by independently investigating deaths and fires and identifying death prevention opportunities. About the Coroners Prevention Unit:
The Coroners Prevention Unit (CPU) is a service established to assist coroners in identifying opportunities to strengthen public health and safety through well-researched, evidence-based recommendations.
It is the only multidisciplinary team of its kind in Australia, comprising specialist staff who work to identify any potential failures and other factors that contributed to the incident.
Coroners can refer matters to the CPU at any point during an investigation. Additionally, the CPU undertakes both individual and collaborative research projects to support coronial investigations, underpinning a better understanding of preventable deaths in Victoria.
About the role:
The CPU maintains a number of databases which store detailed information on reportable deaths that are investigated by coroners, including the Victorian Suicide Register. This information is used to inform coroners' investigations and contribute to relevant publications. It is also requested by external bodies to assist in the planning and evaluation of death prevention initiatives.
