About the role
The fixed term role is until 30th June 2026
Operating under limited direction, this roleplays a key role ensuring the Department of Transport delivers critical road projects. The role leads various activities to ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget and achieve strict quality and safety standards. Reporting to the Project Manager, the Project Leader is responsible for providing expertise for project planning, design, procurement, contract development and execution of works, surveillance; complex stakeholder engagement; coupled with effective financial management.
The Project Leader contributes to developing and delivering project activities, supporting the strategic direction of the Department and building effective stakeholder relationships. To succeed, the incumbent must drive collaborative relationships with municipalities, utility agencies, contractors and other Victorian State Government Departments.
The role is required to work closely with project teams to monitor progress and ensure successful delivery against the four elements of successful project management: cost, time, quality and stakeholder management. The Senior Project Engineer will successfully ensure compliance with legislative requirements, apply expert contract management capabilities and apply professional expertise.

The role requires demonstrated capability in delivering projects to agreed outcomes by defining tasks, coordinating and guiding others, monitoring progress, and taking corrective action when needed. You will add value through effective stakeholder management—linking people across areas, maintaining satisfaction, and addressing issues constructively—while applying sound business and commercial judgment to manage costs, engage external vendors, and ensure accountability. Strong interpersonal skills are essential to understand diverse perspectives, adapt communication to different audiences, and build productive relationships. You will also contribute to strategic planning by aligning day-to-day activities with organisational objectives, setting clear team goals, and guiding others through the planning process.
