About the projects
The Western Freeway Upgrade is a major infrastructure project that will enhance one of Victoria's most critical transport corridors between Melton and Caroline Springs. The project aims to improve road safety, increase capacity, and support the rapidly growing communities of Melbourne's west.
With more than 86,000 vehicles currently using the freeway each day—and traffic volumes expected to exceed 113,000 vehicles daily by 2031—the project will deliver significant improvements including additional freeway lanes, new and upgraded interchanges, overpasses, active transport connections, public transport facilities, and enhanced traffic management infrastructure.
This is a unique opportunity to contribute to a high-profile, complex transport project that will deliver lasting benefits for Victorian communities, improve network performance, and support economic growth across the region. The Western Highway Upgrade from Buangor to Ararat, will enhance 12 km of the major road link between Melbourne and Adelaide. Supporting a growing population, improving safety, and boosting the regional economy including farming, grain production, regional tourism who rely heavily on this highway.

1. Provide strategic, authoritative leadership to deliver a complex major infrastructure package safely, on time, on budget and to required quality, operational and environmental standards, consistent with VIDA Roads’ objectives and government expectations.
2. Establish and maintain robust delivery governance, baselines, milestones and performance frameworks, ensuring effective integration across multiple packages, interfaces and the broader program.
3. Identify, anticipate and lead mitigation of significant legal, commercial, political, environmental and reputational risks, escalating issues appropriately and ensuring proactive, defensible decision‑making.
4. Provide senior leadership throughout delivery phase, fostering collaboration, accountability and commercial discipline while optimising outcomes for the State.
5. Champion best‑practice safety, environmental and sustainability performance, partnering with safety teams and construction leaders to ensure compliance and continuous improvement.
6. Lead critical stakeholder engagement and negotiations with government agencies, local authorities, industry partners and communities, representing VIDA with authority and credibility.
The Project Director is required to undertake the successful development and implementation of delivery strategies required to address critical logistical and technical challenges to the project, minimising impacts on project scope and budget, escalating issues and providing professional support, technical leadership and advise to the Program Director and senior management.
This opportunity is a 3-year fixed-term.
It will be a requirement to travel and spend time at one or all our site offices.
