The role of the principal is to lead and manage the planning, delivery, evaluation and improvement of the education of all students in a community through the deployment of resources provided by the Department and the school community.
At the same time, the principal, as executive officer of the school council, must ensure that adequate and appropriate advice is provided to the council on educational and other matters, that the decisions of the council are implemented and that adequate support and resources are provided for the conduct of council meetings.
The principal is accountable for the overall management and development of the school within statewide guidelines and Government policies. A clear set of accountabilities, which distinguish their work from other members of the Teaching Service and the education community are set out in detail in the contract of employment.

In 2026, Montmorency Primary has an enrolment of 418 students. There are currently 18 grades, comprising of three Foundation classes, three Year 1 classes, two Year 2 classes, two Year 3 classes, three Year 4 classes, two Year 5 classes and three Year 6 classes. The staffing profile at Montmorency Primary School consists of 41 members of staff which includes a Principal, an Assistant Principal, 1 Learning Specialist, 1 Leading Teacher, 26.9 full time equivalent teaching staff and 4.1 Education Support (ES) staff.
A strong emphasis on the implementation of the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model, and explicit teaching approaches to Literacy and Numeracy, along with outstanding specialist programs are supported by a range of engaging and enriching programs and extra-curricular activities both within and beyond the classroom. Our specialist programs include Visual Arts, Japanese, Physical Education, Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Program (SAKG), Performing Arts/Music and Science.
Our learning spaces boast an abundance of spacious, contemporary and flexible teaching areas and the school has recently completed a new build. Students in Grades 3-6 have 1:1 access to school-owned Chromebooks and students in F-2 have access to generous class sets of iPads.
Community engagement is a longstanding commitment at Montmorency Primary School. From the beginning of Foundation through to Grade 6, the school aims to provide many opportunities to build partnerships with families and create a sense of belonging for all families. Family events include Colour Run, Welcome BBQ, Science/Maths Night, Parent Dinners, Picnic in the Park, and so on.
Parents and carers are also welcomed into the classroom as parent helpers, or to assist with excursions and in the cooking program. Teachers meet with parents formally twice per year during our parent-teacher interviews and students invite parents to 'Open Afternoons' where they are able to share their learning in the classroom in a relaxed setting. Students are keen to participate in our bi-annual Whole School Production and school assemblies are well attended by families on Friday mornings. Our parent community is a highly supportive and valued resource, providing expertise through School Council and its committees, supporting a range of programs throughout the school, developing community links and leading fundraising activities.
