The role of the principal is to lead and manage the planning, delivery, evaluation and improvement of the education of all students in a community through the deployment of resources provided by the Department and the school community.
At the same time, the principal, as executive officer of the school council, must ensure that adequate and appropriate advice is provided to the council on educational and other matters, that the decisions of the council are implemented and that adequate support and resources are provided for the conduct of council meetings.
The principal is accountable for the overall management and development of the school within statewide guidelines and Government policies. A clear set of accountabilities, which distinguish their work from other members of the Teaching Service and the education community are set out in detail in the contract of employment.

Carrum Primary School is a community minded primary school founded in 1901 situated at the southern
end of the City of Kingston, where the Patterson River meets Port Phillip Bay. The values of respect,
empathy, collaboration and resilience are the foundation of the Carrum culture. There is pride in the
school's sustainability priorities, including the self-sufficient farmlet, the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen
Garden program, and the wetlands. The school has focussed on strong implementation of VTLM 2.0
through coaching and professional learning.
Carrum Primary School had a total of 365 students enrolled for 2026, 184 female and 181 male. There is
an expected enrolment of 376 for 2027 with 60 Foundation students joining the school. Carrum Primary
School employs 28 teaching staff on a full-time and part-time basis, including 1 principal, 1 assistant
principal, 2 learning specialists and 2 leading teachers. The education support team comprises a business
manager, an administration assistant and a first aid officer with a total of 19 education support staff
