At the same time, the principal, as executive officer of the school council, must ensure that adequate and appropriate advice is provided to the council on educational and other matters, that the decisions of the council are implemented and that adequate support and resources are provided for the conduct of council meetings.
The principal is accountable for the overall management and development of the school within statewide guidelines and Government policies. A clear set of accountabilities, which distinguish their work from other members of the Teaching Service and the education community are set out in detail in the contract of employment.

Chatham Primary School is in the inner eastern Melbourne suburb of Surrey Hills, with 191 students enrolled, drawn from a relatively small catchment area. The school opened in 1927 and has an established alumni of past students, staff and parents, who take an active interest and involvement in the life of the school. Rituals and practices established many years ago continue to be embraced and followed with great interest and commitment, despite changing cohorts of students, staff and parents.
Specialist programs currently provided include Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Japanese and Physical Education. Additionally, students have weekly lessons with their class teachers in the Library and STEM facilities. Typically, these programs create a plethora of related extracurricular experiences for our students. At the senior level, students actively participate in a wide range of Interschool Summer and Winter sporting competitions.
Literacy and Numeracy skills and understandings are of prime importance in ensuring access and capacity building in other areas of the Victorian Curriculum 2.0. Consistent, school-wide routines promote a calm, predictable, and supportive learning environment. This approach aligns with the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model 2.0 and supports consistency of high-quality practice across all classrooms.
The main facility of Chatham Primary School is a two-storey heritage red brick building with a three arched entry. The original 1927 building was extended in 1998, 2011 and in 2023, a $6,000,000 upgrade was completed through the State Government, ensuring students now enjoy state of the art facilities.
The Chatham community is highly engaged and invested, with a School Council that is focussed and aspirational in its governance and intent. Currently, the School Council is comprised of the Principal as Executive Officer, four Department of Education employees and ten parent members. The School Council is also supported by the work of six Committees of School Council.
