The role of the principal is to lead and manage the planning, delivery, evaluation and improvement of the education of all students in a community through the deployment of resources provided by the Department and the school community.
At the same time, the principal, as executive officer of the school council, must ensure that adequate and appropriate advice is provided to the council on educational and other matters, that the decisions of the council are implemented and that adequate support and resources are provided for the conduct of council meetings.
The principal is accountable for the overall management and development of the school within statewide guidelines and Government policies. A clear set of accountabilities, which distinguish their work from other members of the Teaching Service and the education community are set out in detail in the contract of employment.

Fawkner Primary School is situated in the northern suburbs of Melbourne, 12 km from the Central Business District. The school was built in 1960 and at that time was known as Fawkner East Primary School. In 1988 the school changed its name to what is today, Fawkner Primary School.
The school facilities include an indoor multi-purpose hall, two main buildings housing classrooms, an administration centre, sick bay, and staff facilities. The grounds include a large central playground as well as an oval and asphalt areas.
Enrolments are approximately 260 students. Total enrolments have remained stable since 2018. The Student Family Occupation Education (SFOE) index is 0.434 in 2025.
The current staffing profile of Fawkner Primary School includes a principal, an assistant principal, one lead teacher, one learning specialist, 12 classroom teachers and four specialist teachers. There are 13 Education Support staff with varying time fractions, a 0.6 full time equivalent (FTE) Mental Health in Primary School coordinator, a primary welfare officer 0.6 FTE and two administration staff.
The school offers an approved curriculum framework based on the Victorian Curriculum. The specialist classes provided are Visual Arts (Semester 1) and Performing Arts which includes Music and Media Arts for Year 5/6 students (Semester 2), Physical Education/Personal Development, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics)/Digital Technology and Languages Other Than English (LOTE) with Italian the language of choice.
Fawkner Primary School has a pre-school onsite that offers three- and four-year-old kinder. The school has a Breakfast Club, as well as lunch time clubs and a school care group as part of the school's wellbeing programs. Fawkner Primary School has an array of digital technology the students can access from desktop computers, chrome books, laptops, iPad and robotics programs. These technologies are integrated into the school's curriculum.
In 2024, a significant rebuild which included six new classrooms, administration area, new office spaces, sickbay and staffroom was completed.
