The role of the principal is to lead and manage the planning, delivery, evaluation and improvement of the education of all students in a community through the deployment of resources provided by the Department and the school community.
At the same time, the principal, as executive officer of the school council, must ensure that adequate and appropriate advice is provided to the council on educational and other matters, that the decisions of the council are implemented and that adequate support and resources are provided for the conduct of council meetings.
The principal is accountable for the overall management and development of the school within statewide guidelines and Government policies. A clear set of accountabilities, which distinguish their work from other members of the Teaching Service and the education community are set out in detail in the contract of employment.

Omeo Primary School has been a cornerstone of education in the Victorian High Country since 1866. Today, the school continues to honour this rich history while embracing contemporary approaches to teaching, learning and wellbeing. Students come from across the region-including Dinner Plain, Benambra and the Omeo Valley-bringing diversity, curiosity and a strong sense of community to the learning environment.
Omeo Primary School is located in the High Country of East Gippsland. The student population comes from a wide area including - Omeo, Cobungra, Benambra and the Omeo Valley. Over 50% of the students travel to school by bus, some travelling over an hour each way. The SFOE of the school is 0.31, low to medium and in 2024 the school employed a principal, two classroom teachers, a part-time specialist and three education support staff with an EFT of 1.5. In 2024, the school had two classrooms, a P/2 and 3/6. The multi-age approach at the school has a learning design which maximises learning opportunities and meets individual needs.
