The role of the principal is to lead and manage the planning, delivery, evaluation and improvement of the education of all students in a community through the deployment of resources provided by the Department and the school community.
At the same time, the principal, as executive officer of the school council, must ensure that adequate and appropriate advice is provided to the council on educational and other matters, that the decisions of the council are implemented and that adequate support and resources are provided for the conduct of council meetings.
The principal is accountable for the overall management and development of the school within statewide guidelines and Government policies. A clear set of accountabilities, which distinguish their work from other members of the Teaching Service and the education community are set out in detail in the contract of employment.
The core accountabilities of all principals are to:
Appropriately qualified individuals currently registered or eligible for registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching.
The department is committed to diversity and inclusion and developing a workforce that is representative of the community we service. We value diversity and inclusion in all forms - culture, gender, religion, ethnicity, LGBTIQA+, disability and neurodiversity. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander candidates are strongly encouraged to apply for roles within the Department. The Department recognises that the provision of safe, respectful and inclusive workplaces is essential to high performance and promotes flexible work and diversity across all schools and Department workplaces. It is our policy to provide reasonable adjustments for staff with disability (see Workplace adjustment guidelines).
Additional support and advice on the recruitment process is available to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander candidates from the Koorie Outcomes Division (KOD) via [email protected]
Applicants seeking part-time employment are encouraged to apply for any teaching service position and, if they are the successful candidate, request a reduced time fraction. Such requests will be negotiated on a case-by-case basis and will be subject to the operational requirements of the school.
Victorian government schools are child safe environments. Our schools actively promote the safety and wellbeing of all students, and all school staff are committed to protecting students from abuse or harm in the school environment, in accordance with their legal obligations including child safe standards. All schools have a Child Safety Code of Conduct consistent with the department's exemplar available at:

The department's employees commit to upholding the department's Values: Responsiveness, Integrity, Impartiality, Accountability, Respect, Leadership and Human Rights. Nyora Primary School is a school of approximately 30 children, situated 101km southeast of Melbourne in the steadily growing township of Nyora. The school has been responding to the educational needs of the Nyora community since its opening in 1901.
The school provides the community with a place for quality education, where students have the freedom to develop their own character and spirit. The school believes that the essential factor in good education is the personal factor; it is that which makes the difference. Through consideration of the student's individual needs, it is possible to bring about the most valuable educational outcomes.
The concept of partnerships - students, staff, parents and the wider community - is an integral part of the school, which has a commitment to provide a supportive atmosphere and maintain a healthy physical and emotional environment:
- Develop the necessary skills and attitudes to succeed at school and in the wider community and thus encourage a love of learning.
- Encourage each student to discover and develop to the utmost potential, his or her individual capabilities.
- Emphasise basic literacy and numeracy skills.
- A cooperative team based organisational structure which allows for flexibility and is adaptable to change.
Nyora Primary School offers a seven-year developmental program from Prep to Year 6 across the areas of Explicit Systematic Phonics, Reading, Writing, Mathematics, Science, Technology, Society and the Environment, The Arts, and Health and Physical Education. Our teaching and learning are supported by our School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support framework, which promotes a safe, respectful, and responsible learning community.
Enrichment programs in Sport, Computers, Library, Health and Personal Development, and Year 6-7 Transition supplement the curriculum. Our extensive Prep Transition program, Puggle Club, begins in Term 2 with fortnightly sessions on Fridays, increasing to weekly sessions in Term 4 to support a smooth and confident start to school. Learning Technologies play a strong role across all key learning areas. Students also enjoy a range of lunchtime clubs that promote inclusion, creativity, and wellbeing, including our popular Bike Club and other rotating interest-based activities.
Nyora Primary School operates a highly successful, school council-governed Outside School Hours Care program. The program provides a safe, supportive, and engaging environment for students before and after school, fostering positive relationships and continuity between home and school life.
Three class groupings currently operate at Nyora Primary School, organised by year levels. Special programs are tailored to support students with diverse learning needs, supported through our Disability Inclusion practices. Our staffing includes two full-time teachers, one part-time teacher, two full-time education support staff, a full-time Disability Inclusion and Mental Health role, and a full-time business manager who also coordinates our Outside School Hours Care program. The principal is actively involved in classrooms one day a week and delivers specialist programs. The school's SFOE is 0.36.
A variety of teaching and learning strategies are employed in the school to maximise the learning opportunities of all students. The staff participates in a wide range of professional development activities aimed at ensuring that current practice and educational trends are implemented at Nyora Primary School. Regular program reviews, along with ongoing student assessment ensure that teaching and learning experiences are effective and purposeful.
Parents are an integral part of the school community and are encouraged to be involved through our open-door policy. Parental involvement, assistance and feedback are welcomed, and parents assist in the implementation of a wide variety of school programs and activities, including classroom learning centres, swimming, bike-ed, excursions, fundraising, concerts, cluster days, and active Parents and Friends and School Council groups.
The school's physical environment is attractive in its semi-rural location. The school council is continually working towards improving the school's buildings and grounds. The well-maintained grounds feature a basketball court, adventure playgrounds, grass areas and a large asphalt area. Native trees and shrubs have been planted to provide shelter and shade. The school features a contemporary open plan learning facility, library, science/art room and an administration building within the school. The school utilises laptops, tablets and programmable Beebots across the curriculum.
