The role of the principal is to lead and manage the planning, delivery, evaluation and improvement of the education of all students in a community through the deployment of resources provided by the Department and the school community.
At the same time, the principal, as executive officer of the school council, must ensure that adequate and appropriate advice is provided to the council on educational and other matters, that the decisions of the council are implemented and that adequate support and resources are provided for the conduct of council meetings.
The principal is accountable for the overall management and development of the school within statewide guidelines and Government policies. A clear set of accountabilities, which distinguish their work from other members of the Teaching Service and the education community are set out in detail in the contract of employment.

To be eligible for employment, transfer or promotion in the principal or teacher class a person must have provisional or full registration from the Victorian Institute of Teaching. In addition, from 3 August 2020, to be eligible for employment in the principal class or teacher class, a person who graduated from a Victorian Initial Teacher Education program after 1 July 2016, must demonstrate that they have passed the literacy and numeracy test for initial teacher education (LANTITE) requirements. This condition is satisfied where the LANTITE requirement is part of the Victorian Initial Teacher Education program completed by the person.

Raywood Primary School is a small primary school located just under 30km from the Bendigo CBD. Whilst the school is set within the bounds of the Raywood township, our large school boundaries encourage a rural feel within the school. In 2025, we have an enrolment of 18 students from P-6 and are operating a Grade P-1 and Grade 2-6 class. Small class sizes provide the opportunity for our teachers to plan, assess and teach each student in alignment with their individual learning priorities. Current staffing at Raywood PS includes a Teaching Principal, Mental Health & Wellbeing Leader, Classroom Teacher and a part-time Business Manager.
Our vision at Raywood PS is to provide an education for our students that prepares them for a future in a rapidly changing society. We do this by working in partnership with our school families and local community with a focus on encouraging the display of our school values: Respect, Responsibility and Resilience.
The school facilities include a modern multi-classroom and admin building constructed in 2013 along with a number of outbuildings, including a full-size stadium. Our school is well-resourced and provides a wonderful place for students and staff to learn and work. A number of students from the school catch the bus each day, which travels throughout the surrounding area. Our school is visited fortnight as part of the MARC Library Program, and we are also a part of the Campaspe Small Schools and Bendigo Small Schools Clusters through which we participate in cluster student activities and professional learning for staff.
