About the Business Unit
Integrity, Regulation and Legal Services (IRLS) supports the Attorney-General and the Department of Justice and Community Safety (DJCS) Ministers by providing legal, policy, integrity and assurance expertise to DJCS and Justice Ministers. We work collaboratively with key entities across the justice system and the department to ensure policy and legislation reform is strategic, relevant, holistic and people centred.
Integrity Policy and Performance supports the Attorney General in her role as the First Law Officer and Minister responsible for Victoria's justice and integrity system, provides whole-of-Victorian-government policy leadership on integrity and oversight, privacy and information sharing issues, and supports the operation of integrity agencies within the Victorian Government. The Unit facilitates delivery of broader government priorities as required, including priority reform proposals to address police oversight.
About the role
The Principal Legal Policy Officer has a primary focus on priority legislative reform. Ongoing projects currently led by Integrity Policy and Performance include reform proposals to address police oversight and public sector integrity policy as well as supporting the implementation of key recommendations arising from integrity agency reports, inquiries and commissions.
The Principal Legal Policy Officer will be responsible for supporting the manager and leading the co-ordination, development, implementation, review and reform of policy and legislation, while providing considered, informed and authoritative legal policy advice to the manager, senior executives and government on key policy and legislation issues and system reform issues within these areas. This advice should be informed by strategic thinking, relevant technical expertise and strong evidence-based legal policy and analytical skills.
Stakeholder engagement, project management and strong interpersonal collaboration skills are essential in the delivery of the position's purpose. Technical expertise in the areas of justice policy, legal policy and/or budget analysis would be an asset in this role.
This is an exciting opportunity to join an established high performing team in a high-profile area of government. It would suit an experienced legal policy professional or a lawyer with substantial legislative and law reform experience.
