Rubicon Outdoor School is a Department of Education Residential Outdoor School working with Government secondary students. We aim to empower people to develop lifelong positive growth by developing students understanding of self and others, and the skills required to contribute to a positive community and a sustainable environment.

The school exists across two campuses, the Thornton Campus, located in the Rubicon Valley on the lands of the Taungurung People in the Murrindindi Shire and our Nayook Campus, located between the borders of the Bunurong, Wurundjeri and Gunaikurnai People in the Baw Baw Shire. This Role is based at our Nayook Campus.
Annually approximately 3000 state school students attend the school, with the majority of visits being five days. Classes are distributed across the two campuses based on cohort sizes, student level learning requirements and the geographical settings of the campuses. Students live at the school predominantly within a residential setting with both day and overnight lessons occurring in natural environments sometimes further afield. All learning is drawn from the Victorian Curriculum with curriculum foci being co-designed with schools as part of a collaborative process with content descriptors for every program shaping the instructional content.
The school undertakes community of practice arrangements with schools, that sees longer term work between stakeholders focusing on improving the integration of students learning at Rubicon into home school curriculum and measuring the associated outcomes. The School Council is active in policy making and supports the priorities and resource allocation planning across the school. Membership of the school council has representation from the DE, staff members, nominees of key stakeholder groups and community members.

This role requires attendance from Monday through to Friday during the School Term. Some attendance may be required for overnight purpose as part of expeditions or similar, these are planned in accordance with industrial arrangements.
An education support class position at this range will perform tasks that are carried out in accordance with guidelines, accepted practice, and school policy under supervision and direction. This may include coordination of other education support class staff within the work area or educational program.
An education support class position supports the educational services being provided to students but must not include duties of a teacher as defined in clause 2.6.1 of the Education and Training Reform Act 2006 (Vic) or its successor. Supervision of students can be required individually or in groups up to 4 in controlled circumstances and where the responsibility for students remains clearly with a teacher.
A role at this range may include:
Prepare, check and maintain outdoor education equipment including; High Ropes, abseiling, caving, hiking, water-based and other program equipment.
Set up and pack down activity areas and equipment before and after student programs, ensuring equipment is clean, serviceable and stored correctly.
Undertake routine equipment inspections and report faults, damage or maintenance requirements to relevant staff.
Assist with transport, camp logistics and general program preparation, including preparing resources and equipment for residential programs.
Conduct AM and PM duties as required
An education support class position at this range commencing at the base will initially be limited to undertaking routine tasks that are carried out under close supervision and direction. Work that carries some degree of independence will generally involve a limited number of tasks performed on a regular basis where priorities are clear, procedures are well established, and direction is readily available. Subject to any specific qualification and/or training requirement, an education support class employee employed in this range may be progressively required to undertake coordination, specialised student/teacher support tasks, or technical tasks as experience in the role is gained.

LEADERSHIP

ADMINISTRATION AND PLANNING
Participation in professional planning as required
Engage in professional learning and support
Planning for use, maintenance and replacement of equipment and resources
Use a range of online systems to order and log the movement of equipment
Participate in relevant training, inductions and professional development to maintain competency in outdoor activities and school procedures.
Additional tasks and roles as allocated by the Principal and/or Campus Principal.
TEACHER SUPPORT FOR STUDENT LEARNING
Support Teachers:
In the delivery of outdoor education programs, working within established procedures, risk assessments and activity plans.
In the delivery of outdoor education programs, as part of the required activity supervision ratio and under the direction of appropriately qualified teaching staff.
With behaviour management processes and protocols.
With program activities including overnight journeys / camps when required.
Support Student Learning:
Assist students with identified program activities and learning tasks
Encouraging participation
Assist students with social, emotional and/or behavioural regulation
Provide assistance to students with disability and additional needs
COMMUNICATION
Work collaboratively with teachers and outdoor education staff to ensure programs run safely, efficiently and effectively.
Individuals with the aptitude, experience and/or qualifications to fulfill the specific requirements of the position.
