About Youth Justice
The Youth Justice Strategic Plan 2020-30 includes a reform direction to deliver culturally appropriate interventions and supports to address the overrepresentation of multicultural groups in Youth Justice. A significant proportion of Youth Justice involved young people are from multicultural backgrounds. Tackling multicultural overrepresentation in Youth Justice requires an understanding of the sociodemographic factors that contribute to offending, as well as reducing reoffending and promoting community safety by putting cultural factors at the centre of assessment and case planning.
The youth justice service provides community-based supervision and a range of case management and support services for young people who are appearing before, or have been sentenced by, the Children's Court, Children's Koori Court and adult criminal courts and who have been placed on youth justice supervised orders.
About the role
The Multicultural Practitioner will provide advice to support culturally competent and responsive case management and diversion planning across Youth Justice, including in the Children's Court Youth Diversion Service, to ensure culturally responsive practice that contributes to reducing reoffending behaviour. The role will directly engage young people and families from a wide variety of cultural backgrounds and will support the uplift of workforce cultural capability. The role will also engage with community members and organisations to provide linkages to relevant multicultural support programs and assist with fostering a strong partnership with multicultural and multifaith communities.
Youth Justice currently has one full time, fixed-term role till 30 June 2027
