The Mental Health Practitioners (MHP) initiative was announced by the Minister for Education in late 2018 to expand mental health and wellbeing support in government schools. The initiative provides for a suitably qualified mental health professional in all government secondary school campuses and specialist school (with secondary-aged enrolments) settings.
Operating in collaboration with the relevant Department of Education Regional Mental Health Branch, this role has the following functions:

The successful applicant will be an experienced professional who will carry out their duties and responsibilities, relative to their professional discipline, with a high level of autonomy and with minimal reliance on professional supervision. The successful applicant will be responsible for the development and implementation of professional support programs within an educational environment, including guidance to other professional staff.
As an education support class position, this role supports the educational services being provided to students, but will not include duties of teaching as defined in clause 2.6.1 of the Education and Training Reform Act 2006 (Vic).

Beechworth Secondary College is a single campus school of approximately 300 students in Beechworth in rural North East Victoria. Students are drawn from 11 schools in the surrounding area of Yackandandah and the wider Indigo Valley. Our school has approximately 40 EFT staff, 2.0 Principal class and 7.00 EFT Education Support Staff. Our numbers are increasing, and we need more staff.
Future focused:
A new Beechworth Secondary College leadership team has been in place since 2020, and the team is working cohesively to develop and implement a consistent whole school instructional approach to teaching and learning as well as strategies for improving student literacy and numeracy outcomes. Our teachers are focussed on working collaboratively to improve classroom practice by implementing High Impact Teaching Strategies and using formative and diagnostic assessment to identify students at their point of need and plan for teaching.
Our school prides itself on "Connecting Communities, Widening Worlds" and living our values of Aspire, Respect and Contribute. At Year 7 - 10, our college offers a core program in line with the Victorian Curriculum, with Year 10 students having the option to undertake a VCE subject as extension. Our students are able to access learning supports through MYLNS-Middle Years Literacy & Numeracy Support, TLI-Tutor Learning Initiative and extension through the High Ability and Excellence programs.
At Senior School level, we offer students' access to VCE, VM, SBA and VETiS programs. Our onsite subject offerings are complemented by access to Virtual School Victorian and Victorian School of Languages and is linked directly to our pathways program to ensure all students have access to the subjects and experiences they require to move on to a fulfilling post-school pathway. Our students also access the recent VCE extension University programs through CHES-Centre for Higher Education Studies.
