1. Providing high quality and pragmatic legal advice across a broad range of legal areas, with a key focus on matters relating to project development, procurement, delivery, contracting and interface issues.
2. Managing all day-to-day legal aspects for the VIDA Roads projects or other matters allocated to the Managing Principal Lawyer.
3. Collaborating closely with other Legal team members, broader multi-disciplinary project teams, external advisors and other stakeholders to provide best-for-project and best-for-program solutions.
4. Leading, mentoring and guiding employees within the legal team and undertaking people management responsibilities as required.
5. Managing external advisors to ensure issues are considered efficiently and a consistent and agreed approach is taken to support VIDA Roads and project expectations.
6. Proactively establishing and maintaining trusted relationships and competently influencing or negotiating with relevant senior internal and external stakeholders to ensure VIDA Roads’ and projects’ objectives are met and strengthen strategic approaches to legal matters arising on major transport infrastructure projects.
This is a rare opportunity to shape Victoria’s road infrastructure on key major construction projects. This role will be the lead lawyer for a suite of Big Build Roads projects, including being the primary point of contact for a delivery Program Director and their multi-disciplinary project team. The role will also work closely with a group of other lawyers, many of whom are part-time or work flexibly, to ensure coverage of legal support across Big Build Roads.
The Managing Principal Lawyer will interface with VIDA Roads client teams, external advisors and VIDA Roads’ broader Commercial and Legal team to ensure a consistent and agreed approach is taken on legal positions which support the Project’s objectives. The position will be responsible for managing the legal needs for particular VIDA Roads matters or teams, as well as contributing to the strategic and cross-business initiatives.
About You
1. Admitted, or eligible to be admitted, as a legal practitioner to the Supreme Court of Victoria.
2. Holds, or is eligible to hold, a practising certificate.
3. Strong experience in providing legal advice and preparing legal documentation at a senior level on complex construction or infrastructure projects.
4. Works with minimal supervision, taking on responsibility for legal advice and drafting whilst managing, supporting and developing other team members.
5. Strong understanding of legal issues which may be expected to arise in a complex and dynamic government project environment, including in relation to:
a. major infrastructure project delivery;
b. construction and contract law issues;
c. complex commercial arrangements and non-traditional contracting models;
d. applicable legislation, regulatory and compliance matters; and
e. stakeholder engagement.
6. Sound awareness of current and emerging best practice in the procurement, construction delivery, risk management and legal fields.
This is a 3 year maximum term opportunity.
The role is based in the CBD and will travel and spend time at one or all our site offices from time to time.
