Learning Specialist Head of Mathematics
The Role Learning Specialists will be highly skilled classroom practitioners who continue to spend the majority of their time in the classroom delivering high-quality teaching and learning and have a range of responsibilities related to their expertise, including teaching demonstration lessons, observing and providing feedback to other teachers and facilitating school-based professional learning.
Learning Specialists are expected to have deep knowledge and expertise in high quality teaching and learning in delivering improved achievement, engagement and wellbeing for students. The role of the learning specialist will be to model excellence in teaching and learning through demonstration lessons, and mentoring and coaching teachers in improving the skill, knowledge and effectiveness of the teaching workforce.
The Learning Specialist role is aimed at building excellence in teaching and learning within the Teaching Service.
Position Responsibilities
In recognition of the importance of exemplary teaching practice for improved student learning outcomes, the key roles of the Learning Specialist may include but are not limited to:
¿ lead the Mathematics Domain in the capacity of Domain Leader, including administrative, budget management and coaching duties within the Domain.
¿ lead the Mathematics PLC to analyse student learning data and identify problems of practice to develop and evaluate interventions to teaching practice.
¿ demonstrate high-level expertise in teaching and learning practice, with a focus on numeracy.
¿ provide a child safe environment in accordance with the child safe standards.
¿ modelling exemplary classroom practice including through teaching demonstration lessons.
¿ working with the school leadership team to develop a shared view of highly effective teacher practice.
¿ leading and modelling the implementation of whole-school improvement strategies related to curriculum planning and delivery with a focus on numeracy in a senior school context.
¿ playing a key role in the provision of professional learning, including through developing processes and protocols for observation and feedback of teacher practice and peer collaboration.
¿ modelling effective learning best practice and supporting teachers to seek, analyse and act on feedback on their practice, relating to numeracy practices.
¿ providing evidence-based feedback to teaching staff to inform their effectiveness and development of best practice strategies.
¿ providing expert advice about the content, processes and strategies that will shape individual and school professional learning.
¿ supervising and training one or more pre service teachers, and mentoring and, or coaching teachers.
¿ Implement the MYLNS, TLI and other student learning intervention programs with students.
¿ supporting classroom tutors in the TLI, MYLNS and other student learning intervention programs in collaboration with the Teaching and Leading Team.
¿ modelling exemplary analysis and use of student data to inform teaching approaches.
¿ developing and promoting school-wide professional learning structures, processes and protocols through professional learning communities, and modelling exemplary professional learning practice including through seeking feedback from other teachers and leaders on their own classroom practice as part of critical reflection and inquiry to improve practice.
¿ co-leading the Year 10 induction program and other student learning programs, including revision and study skills programs.
¿ raising the profile of numeracy and the Mathematics Domain through the leading of Numeracy related activities and events throughout the year.
¿ representing the Mathematics Domain during Pathways conversations, presentations and course counselling program.
¿ leading the development of new Mathematics subjects as appropriate, including collaborating with the Pathways and Transitions Team in relation to assessment and selection of students for
VCE Access and advanced Mathematics.
¿ supporting extracurricular numeracy related activities such as interschool Mathematics competitions, maths week etc.
¿ Staying abreast of DET and network based initiatives eg VTLM2.0 and Maths 2.0, the region based COP etc, current educational research and best practice that influence student learning
programs
¿ Contributing to strategies that enhance student engagement and motivation in mathematics.
¿ Supporting teachers in differentiating instruction to meet the needs to diverse learners
¿ Other, as required by Principal

Teachers currently registered or eligible for registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching and qualified to teach and/or have demonstrated experience in the curriculum area(s) specified for the position.

School Profile
Homestead Senior Secondary College opened in 2020 and is located in a developing area of Point Cook, approximately 28 kilometres from Melbourne CBD. Our feeder schools are the local P-9 colleges ¿ Alamanda and Saltwater P-9 Colleges. A significant percentage of our enrolments are new arrivals to the greater Point Cook community. Homestead also attracts a growing number of enrolments from the independent school¿s sector. Rapid growth is predicted for both the suburb and school over the next 5 to 10 years.
In 2025 we expect approximately 600 students at HSSC, and it is projected that the college¿s peak enrolment will be in excess of 1500 students.
