Leading teachers will be highly skilled classroom practitioners and undertake leadership and management roles commensurate with their salary range. The role of leading teachers is to improve the skill, knowledge and performance of the teaching workforce in a school or group of schools and to improve the curriculum program of a school.
Typically, leading teachers are responsible for coordinating a number of staff to achieve improvements in teaching and learning which may involve the coordination and professional support of colleagues through modelling, collaborating and coaching and using processes that develop knowledge, practice and professional engagement in others.
Leading teachers are expected to lead and manage a significant area or function within the school with a high degree of independence to ensure the effective development, provision and evaluation of the school's education program.
Leading teachers will be expected to make a significant contribution to policy development relating to teaching and learning in the school. A leading teacher has a direct impact and influence on the achievement of the school goals.
Leading teachers are usually responsible for the implementation of one or more priorities contained in the school strategic plan.

Role
The key role of the leading teacher in teaching and learning at NCAT are:
leading and managing the implementation of whole-school improvement initiatives related to the school strategic plan and school priorities ¿ plan and implement high-impact teaching strategies that respond to the learning needs of the students and align with the elements of learning and teaching under the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model 2.0
leading and managing the implementation of whole-school improvement strategies related to curriculum planning and delivery, particularly in the area of literacy. This includes the ability to monitor and assess student learning at a class, cohort and whole-school level using data to lead change
leading and managing the provision of professional learning and developing individual and team performance and development plans for teaching staff within the priorities of the school ¿ support teachers to evaluate their impact on the learning and development of students
developing and promoting school-wide professional learning structures, processes and protocols through professional learning communities
leading and managing staff performance and development (review of staff), particularly in the Arts area of the College
playing a key role in the provision of professional learning, including through developing processes and protocols for observation and feedback of teacher practice and peer collaboration
collaborating with Leadership on the development and facilitation of the school¿s assessment and reporting policies and practices
leading the development of curriculum in English and participating in curriculum development in other areas
contributing to the overall leadership and management of the school through collaboration with the Leadership team, facilitating of whole-school professional development and modelling and practicing exemplary interpersonal skills and collaborative relationships with peers, students, parents/carers and the community.

NCAT provides individualised programs and pathways for students wanting to pursue further study, employment or training in areas such as Art, Multimedia, Animation, Photography and Digital Imaging, Fashion & Graphic Design, Dance, Music, Sound Production, Screen/Video, Automotive, Electro-Technology, Integrated Technologies, Engineering, Plumbing, Furniture & Musical Instrument Production, Building & Construction, and Sport & Fitness.
NCAT received The Age newspaper¿s 2022 Schools that Excel Award for its VCE results. In the same year, the Vocational Major Learning Specialist was awarded Teacher of the Year Award for the outstanding and unique integrated VCALs/Vocational Majors running at NCAT. In 2024 an NCAT student, Carly Brown, was named Vocational Student of the Year at the Victorian Training Awards.
From Year 10 students can choose to follow an Arts or a Technology or stream and then continue to specialise at Years 11 and 12 where they can do VCE, VET or a variety of specialist integrated VCE Vocational Major programs. Post Year 12 students can do Certificate IV programs in Music, Sound Production, Design, Visual Arts and Photography and the Diploma of Photography and Digital Imaging. NCAT is the only training provider in Australia running the Certificate III and IV in Musical Instrument Making and Repair.
As well as running programs for its own full-time students, NCAT is also a regional provider of VET in Schools training to 700 students from 75 other State, Catholic and Independent schools who come for training one day per week.
NCAT has specialist Arts facilities includes purpose-built studios for drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking and textiles/fashion disciplines as well as Apple Mac labs. Its Photography centre includes four photographic studios and black and white and colour darkrooms. In the area of Music NCAT has ten fully equipped music practice rooms, two large music technology labs, its own industry level music recording studio, Music recital room and performing arts centre. The college also has two dance studios and a dedicated theatre studies centre.
The college is a recognized leader in Technology Education with Leading School status. Its VET programs are highly regarded for the quality and innovativeness of the delivery and the close links with industry. NCAT has unique, trades and technology facilities including a Trade Training Centre. Facilities include extensive workshop for automotive, building & construction, engineering, electrotechnology, furniture/wood, integrated technologies/ robotics & telecommunications, musical instrument making & repair and plumbing.
