Leading teachers will be highly skilled classroom practitioners and undertake leadership and management roles commensurate with their salary range. The role of leading teachers is to improve the skill, knowledge and performance of the teaching workforce in a school or group of schools and to improve the curriculum program of a school.
Typically, leading teachers are responsible for coordinating a number of staff to achieve improvements in teaching and learning which may involve the coordination and professional support of colleagues through modelling, collaborating and coaching and using processes that develop knowledge, practice and professional engagement in others.
Leading teachers are expected to lead and manage a significant area or function within the school with a high degree of independence to ensure the effective development, provision and evaluation of the school's education program.
Leading teachers will be expected to make a significant contribution to policy development relating to teaching and learning in the school. A leading teacher has a direct impact and influence on the achievement of the school goals.
Leading teachers are usually responsible for the implementation of one or more priorities contained in the school strategic plan.
Leadership and Sub-School (7-9)
¿ Actively contribute as a member of the MEC Leadership Team, including participation in Leadership, and Wellbeing implementation Team meetings. ¿ Collaborate with the Leadership Team to develop, implement, and monitor school priorities aligned to the SSP and AIP. ¿ Provide leadership and oversight of the Year 7¿9 sub-school, ensuring effective day-to day operations. ¿ Lead and support Year Level Coordinators to build leadership capacity and consistent practice. ¿ Conduct weekly leadership meetings with Year Level Coordinators and the Assistant Principal (7¿12). ¿ Ensure all relevant DE and school policies and practices are consistently implemented. ¿ Undertake additional duties as directed by the Principal in alignment with the role and school priorities.
Student Wellbeing, Engagement and Behaviour
¿ Lead the implementation of Positive Classroom Management Strategies (PCMS), When Challenges Arise, Real Schools, and BSEM. ¿ Promote high expectations to strengthen student achievement, engagement, attendance, and connectedness. ¿ Manage significant behaviour and wellbeing matters beyond Year Level Coordinators. ¿ Support the implementation of therapy plans, student profiles, and goal-based Individual Education Plans (IEPs). ¿ Work with the Assistant Principal Wellbeing and Inclusion to support Disability Inclusion (DI) profiles, including attending meetings as required.
Data, Monitoring and Intervention
¿ Use a range of data sources to monitor student progress, achievement, attendance, and wellbeing across the sub-school. ¿ Lead data-informed decision making to ensure timely implementation of targeted interventions, supports, and extension opportunities. ¿ Ensure accurate recording and tracking of student information, attendance, plans, and interventions in Compass.
Staff Leadership and Development
¿ Provide high-level professional support to staff through regular meetings, coaching, and guidance. ¿ Lead collaboration across the sub-school to promote consistency in practice and expectations. ¿ Support staff to effectively implement student wellbeing and behaviour strategies.
Operations and Organisation
¿ Oversee the day-to-day organisation of the sub-school, including planning and coordination of special events and activities. ¿ Develop timetables for sub-school events and coordinate logistics. ¿ Manage Teacher Assistants within Years 7¿9, including allocation, timetabling, and weekly meetings. ¿ Support the Assistant Principal (7¿12) in managing alternate programs, new enrolments, and student management processes. ¿ Work with relevant staff to ensure appropriate adjustments and support for students requiring special provision.
Pathways and Transitions
¿ Support student subject selection processes in collaboration with relevant Leading Teachers, including organisation of information sessions, handbooks, and pathways education. ¿ Support Transition Coordinator Year 6 into Year 7. ¿ Assist with planning end-of-year activities and transition programs in partnership with the Assistant Principal (7¿12) and relevant staff.

Teachers currently registered or eligible for registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching and qualified to teach and/or have demonstrated experience in the curriculum area(s) specified for the position.
