Leading teachers will be highly skilled classroom practitioners and undertake leadership and management roles commensurate with their salary range. The role of leading teachers is to improve the skill, knowledge and performance of the teaching workforce in a school or group of schools and to improve the curriculum program of a school. Typically, leading teachers are responsible for coordinating a number of staff to achieve improvements in teaching and learning which may involve the coordination and professional support of colleagues through modelling, collaborating and coaching and using processes that develop knowledge, practice and professional engagement in others.
Leading teachers are expected to lead and manage a significant area or function within the school with a high degree of independence to ensure the effective development, provision and evaluation of the school's education program. Leading teachers will be expected to make a significant contribution to policy development relating to teaching and learning in the school. A leading teacher has a direct impact and influence on the achievement of the school goals.
Leading teachers are usually responsible for the implementation of one or more priorities contained in the school strategic plan.
SPECIFIC ROLE DESCRIPTION
The leadership structure of GWSC incorporates Heads of Learning Areas, one for each of the key learning areas. Heads of Learning Area work closely with the Principal Team and other members of the Leadership Team.
The senior leadership team is a cohesive group which provides considered and innovative educational leadership to a large, complex and vibrant learning community that values lifelong learning and has high expectations for all learners.
The College Strategic Plan and Annual Implementation Plan describes in detail the goals and priorities of the College and the work in which all staff are involved. Heads of Learning Area play a key role in ensuring that the following core issues are addressed comprehensively and systematically:
Caring for each student as an individual and ensuring that all make progress.
Improving the quality of teaching and learning that occurs in every classroom in the College.
Each Head of Learning Area is responsible for the leadership of a key learning area, within the guidelines set by the College, DET and the VCAA. As such they provide leadership, direction and support to the teaching staff in that area and ensure that the curriculum program is effectively implemented.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Work as part of the senior leadership team to develop a clear vision for the College and provide strong leadership in implementing this vision.
Provide effective and dynamic leadership of the team of teachers in the learning area, driving continuous improvement in curriculum design and delivery in line with contemporary educational pedagogy and the College's Instructional Model.
Lead and monitor staff to:
Embed the GWSC Instructional Model into everyday teacher practice within the faculty.
Oversee and manage the documentation of all courses of study, ensuring alignment with DET, VCAA and the Victorian Curriculum.
Ensure the agreed curriculum is effectively and consistently implemented by all teachers in the learning area, including differentiation to meet students at their point of need.
Implement whole-school priorities.
Lead the design and consistent implementation of effective formative and summative assessment practices, ensuring they inform student learning progress.
Ensure College Compass School Resources and Learning Tasks are current, consistent, and accessible to all staff, supporting a cohesive, documented, and implemented curriculum, teaching, assessment, and reporting program.
Ensure the College's assessment and reporting policies are effectively implemented, and provide direction and guidance on issues related to assessment and reporting.
Provide opportunities within teams for benchmarking and/or moderation to support consistent assessment and reporting practices.
Lead and implement faculty meetings that support a guaranteed and viable curriculum, embedding purposeful professional learning and structured collaboration. Ensure the professional learning plan is responsive to faculty need, informed by student data, and aligned to whole-school priorities.
Provide oversight and strategic direction for the PLTs within the learning area.
Provide leadership for subject selection within the learning area and collaborate strategically with the relevant Assistant Principal to support the course selection process.
Lead the performance and development process for teachers within the learning area through the DET Statement of Expectation, supporting reflection, growth and continuous improvement in teaching practice. This includes providing targeted support to teachers not meeting the required professional standards and to new teachers in the College.
Foster a positive and professional team culture by proactively addressing concerns early and constructively, supporting individuals and teams to build capacity as needs arise (including in collaboration with Sub-school leaders), and escalating matters to the Assistant Principal where appropriate.
Oversee the day-to-day organisation of the learning area. This includes:
ordering and managing appropriate resources
coordinating booklists
allocating mentors and providing support to mentors and their mentees
ensuring provision of work for absent teachers
overseeing faculty-specific OHS requirements, including faculty-specific induction for new staff
overseeing excursions and incursions
Represent the learning area at extra-curricular events specific to the nature of the position, for example, Information Evening, Course Counselling, Open Nights, Presentation Night, etc.
Work closely with the Assistant Principal and Timetabler to develop and maintain a staffing profile that meets the needs of the learning area and the broader College. This includes contributing to strategic workforce planning, participation in selection panels, managing allotments, and overseeing new or revised course offerings.
Work collaboratively with the Assistant Principal on Human Resources matters, including staffing processes and recruitment, and provide leadership and support to staff in relation to role clarity, induction, and workforce-related matters as they arise.
Other duties as directed by the Principal.

SCOPE
Reports to the Assistant Principal (curriculum). Works with the Heads of Learning Areas on implementing the school priorities. Works with other Leading Teachers and the Principal Team as a member of the Leadership Team to support all students to learn and make progress.

Teachers currently registered or eligible for registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching and qualified to teach and/or have demonstrated experience in the curriculum area(s) specified for the position.
