ROLE DESCRIPTION
Leading teachers will be highly skilled classroom practitioners and undertake leadership and management roles commensurate with their salary range. The role of leading teachers is to improve the skill, knowledge and performance of the teaching workforce in a school or group of schools and to improve the curriculum program of a school. Typically, leading teachers are responsible for coordinating a number of staff to achieve improvements in teaching and learning which may involve the coordination and professional support of colleagues through modelling, collaborating and coaching and using processes that develop knowledge, practice and professional engagement in others. Leading teachers are expected to lead and manage a significant area or function within the school with a high degree of independence to ensure the effective development, provision and evaluation of the school's education program. Leading teachers will be expected to make a significant contribution to policy development relating to teaching and learning in the school. A leading teacher has a direct impact and influence on the achievement of the school goals. Leading teachers are usually responsible for the implementation of one or more priorities contained in the school strategic plan.
SPECIFIC ROLE DESCRIPTION
The Director of Sport provides leadership of the College's sport program, working collaboratively with staff to ensure the effective design, coordination, and delivery of inclusive, high-quality sporting opportunities for all students. The role contributes to the broader work of the College in supporting student engagement, wellbeing, and connection through participation in sport.
While distinct in portfolio, the Director of Sport works in collaboration with the College Leadership Team to ensure a cohesive and consistent approach to student experience. This includes contributing to a culture where students are known, supported, and encouraged to achieve their personal best across all aspects of school life.
The sport program is guided by the College Strategic Plan and is designed to promote participation, excellence, and personal growth. The Director of Sport leads a whole-school approach that supports both broad student involvement and opportunities for high-level competition through interschool opportunities.
In fulfilling this role, the Director of Sport demonstrates strong professional conduct, builds positive relationships with students, staff, and families, and supports colleagues to deliver safe, inclusive, and well-organised sport programs. The role balances operational leadership with a clear focus on building staff capability, developing student leadership, and ensuring effective and compliant program delivery.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Provide effective and dynamic leadership in the area of sport across the College.
Lead the development, implementation, and ongoing improvement of the College's sport program, ensuring alignment with the College Strategic Plan and Sport Mission Statement.
Lead a culture of high expectations across the sport program, ensuring all students are supported and challenged to achieve their personal best.
Embed and promote the College's vision and values in all aspects of the sport program, including student participation, staff practice, and community engagement.
Model and support consistent expectations for student behaviour, effort, and engagement in sport, aligned with whole-school approaches.
Ensure the program provides balanced opportunities for participation, competition, and excellence across all year levels.
Monitor and evaluate program effectiveness, including student participation, engagement, and outcomes, and use this to inform continuous improvement.
Build the capacity of staff to plan, coach, and deliver high-quality sport programs through modelling, guidance, and targeted support.
Lead the planning and delivery of professional learning for staff involved in coaching and team management, including sport-specific skills, safety, and effective student engagement.
Support staff to implement inclusive practices that enable all students to access and participate in sport, including those requiring adjustments.
Mentor and develop the Assistant Sport Coordinator and staff involved in the sport program.
Lead and grow the GWSC Sport Leadership Program, building student voice, agency, and leadership capability.
Mentor and support Sport Captains and student leaders to plan, organise, and lead events and initiatives.
Foster a culture of inclusion, teamwork, and positive participation across all sport programs.
Promote student wellbeing, engagement, and belonging through sport participation.
Lead and facilitate the planning and execution of all College sporting events, including:
Middle and Senior House Athletics and Swimming Carnivals
Cross Country events and representative teams
Lead the planning, organisation, and implementation of interschool sport competitions at Waverley Division, Eastern Region, and SSV levels.
Coordinate logistics including venues, transport, equipment, staffing, and scheduling.
Liaise with external schools, sporting bodies, and officials to ensure effective coordination of competitions and events.
Attend Waverley Division, Eastern Region and SSV meetings as required.
Oversee all sport-related excursions and incursions, ensuring compliance with Department and College policies and procedures.
Ensure all sport programs meet Occupational Health and Safety requirements, including risk assessments, supervision, and emergency planning.
Support and upskill staff in safe coaching practices, risk management, and duty of care responsibilities.
Ensure appropriate documentation and processes are in place for all events, competitions, and activities.
Maintain clear and effective communication with students, staff, and families regarding sport programs, expectations, and opportunities.
Lead the allocation and coordination of staff to support sport programs, ensuring appropriate supervision, expertise, and coverage.
Oversee the organisation and support of staff coaching teams and event management.
Manage and allocate resources, including equipment and facilities, to ensure safe and effective program delivery.
Ensure efficient use of time, staffing, and resources to maximise student participation and program quality.
Represent the College in external sport networks and liaise with relevant organisations and stakeholders.
Promote and celebrate student achievement and participation in sport, including assemblies and College communications.
Lead and facilitate the planning and delivery of the Annual Sports Awards.
Support students to take active roles in event planning and leadership opportunities.
Ensure student achievement, effort, and participation in sport are recognised and celebrated across the College.
Lead and facilitate the Sport Leadership Program.
Participate in school assemblies and present sport reports and awards as required.

SCOPE
The Director of Sport reports to the Principal Team and works collaboratively with all staff to support the effective delivery of the College sport program. The Director of Sport mentors and supports the Assistant Sport Coordinator and staff involved in sport. The Director of Sport is a member of the Leadership Team.
Teachers currently registered or eligible for registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching and qualified to teach and/or have demonstrated experience in the curriculum area(s) specified for the position.
