Karwan Primary School operates with a distributed leadership model designed to maximise impact across all areas of the school. The revised structure includes a Principal, an Assistant Principal-3, three Assistant Principal-1 roles (P-2, Years 3-6, Inclusion), eight Leading Teachers with clearly defined portfolios across curriculum, wellbeing and inclusion and Professional Learning Team (PLT) Leaders providing targeted team support.
All leadership roles include coaching and mentoring responsibilities, ensuring staff development and continuous improvement across the school. Principal class roles are set to commence at the start of Term 3, Leading Teacher positions at the start of Term 4, and PLT Leaders will be appointed in preparation for the 2027 school year.
This role is a middle leader role and will be an active member of the School Improvement Team (SIT) focused on leading and strengthening whole-school literacy improvement, with a strong emphasis on reading, writing and oral language outcomes. Working closely with the Leadership Team, this role provides high-level instructional leadership in literacy across the school, ensuring consistency, high expectations and strong outcomes for all students in literacy. Key responsibilities include:
Maintaining a strong visible presence across the school.
Contributing to subject specific goals, key improvement strategies (KIS), actions and tasks aligned to the School Strategic Plan (SSP) and Annual Implementation Plan (AIP).
Leading the whole-school implementation of evidence-informed literacy practices aligned to the Victorian Curriculum 2.0 and Victorian Teaching and Learning Model 2.0.
Building teacher capability in reading, writing and oral language through coaching, modelling and targeted professional learning.
Overseeing consistent assessment practices, including data collection, analysis and moderation of student achievement.
Leading the development and refinement of a coherent literacy scope and sequence across all year levels.
Monitoring student literacy outcomes and coordinating targeted interventions for students requiring additional support.
Embedding high-impact teaching strategies, including explicit instruction and differentiation, across literacy programs.
Supporting strong Tier 1 and Tier 2 literacy instruction to improve equity and student outcomes.
Working collaboratively with other Assistant Principals and Leading Teachers to ensure consistency across the school.
Undertaking additional leadership responsibilities as delegated by the Principal.

Leading teachers will be highly skilled classroom practitioners and undertake leadership and management roles commensurate with their salary range. The role of leading teachers is to improve the skill, knowledge and performance of the teaching workforce in a school or group of schools and to improve the curriculum program of a school.
Typically, leading teachers are responsible for coordinating a number of staff to achieve improvements in teaching and learning which may involve the coordination and professional support of colleagues through modelling, collaborating and coaching and using processes that develop knowledge, practice and professional engagement in others.
Leading teachers are expected to lead and manage a significant area or function within the school with a high degree of independence to ensure the effective development, provision and evaluation of the school's education program.
Leading teachers will be expected to make a significant contribution to policy development relating to teaching and learning in the school. A leading teacher has a direct impact and influence on the achievement of the school goals.
Leading teachers are usually responsible for the implementation of one or more priorities contained in the school strategic plan.
