SC1 Completion of a Certificate IV in Laboratory Technician Management or equivalent and/or have other relevant training or experience.
SC2 Demonstrated knowledge, understanding and experience in the use of relevant legislation & safety codes (e.g. safety, storage & disposal of hazardous materials) guidelines & procedures.
SC3 Demonstrated capacity to show initiative in the provision of a broad range of support to teachers & students as required in accordance with guidelines, accepted practice & school policy in regard to the science program.
SC4 Provide evidence of high level organisational, written and communication skills with the ability to prioritise tasks to work within specified timelines and requirements.
SC5 Demonstrate a capability and willingness to develop / improve technical skills in order to integrate new and / or repurposed equipment and / or procedures into the curriculum.
Attendance is only required during school term periods.
This position does not require constant supervision and what supervision is required would come from a senior technician or laboratory manager.
An education support class position supports the educational services being provided to students, but must not include duties of teaching as defined in clause 2.6.1 of the Education and Training Reform Act 2006 (Vic) or its successor. Supervision of students cannot be required except where it is an integral part of the employee's position or involves supervision of students individually or in small groups, in controlled circumstances, where the responsibility for students remains clearly with a teacher.
Typical duties of the Science Laboratory Technician Assistant are:
Teacher Support:
1. Liaise with science teaching staff on their needs for practical work and maintain an efficient system for use and allocation of materials and equipment, setting a priority system where necessary.
2. Advise and assist science-teaching staff in safety matters relating to the science laboratory.
3. Prepare safety assessments in relation to Preparation tasks.
Preparation & Maintenance:
1) Prepare solutions, stains and media for use in the laboratory.
2) Maintain a safe chemical storage/handling/disposal system in accordance with current regulations.
3) Assist with security of science laboratory and equipment.
4) Maintain an inventory of equipment.
5) Assist with labelling, storage, stocktaking and ordering of equipment and chemicals.
6) Service and clean simple laboratory apparatus/equipment.
7) Attend appropriate professional development.
Care:
1) Care for flora and fauna within the science department, in accordance with current handling and prevention of cruelty regulations.
Individuals with the aptitude, experience and/or qualifications to fulfill the specific requirements of the position.
