About the Role:
The IT Cloud Systems Engineer Reports to the IT Operations Manager is responsible for the administration, maintenance, and continuous improvement of the agency's cloud-based ICT infrastructure, with a primary focus on Microsoft Azure and Microsoft 365 environments.
The role ensures the stability, performance, and security of core systems, including virtual machines, network services, identity management, and collaboration platforms such as SharePoint and Teams. The Systems Engineer also plays a key role in implementing cybersecurity controls, supporting disaster recovery, automating operational processes, and contributing to the delivery of technology projects and initiatives across the organisation.
What we're looking for:
We're seeking an experienced IT Cloud Systems Engineer with strong expertise in Microsoft Azure and Microsoft 365 environments. You'll bring proven skills in managing cloud infrastructure, hybrid identity services, and collaboration platforms such as SharePoint and Teams.
You'll have a solid understanding of cybersecurity frameworks (e.g., Essential Eight, Cloud Adoption Framework), disaster recovery planning, and automation through scripting (PowerShell or similar). Strong problem-solving, stakeholder collaboration, and documentation skills are essential, along with the ability to provide expert advice and contribute to enterprise-wide technology initiatives.
You will contribute by:
- Manage, support, and enhance the agency's cloud infrastructure in Microsoft Azure, including virtual machines, networking, backup, and identity services.
- Administer Microsoft 365 services including Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, OneDrive, Purview, Intune, and Teams, ensuring effective configuration, performance, and compliance.
- Manage and support Power Platform, Power Pages, Dataverse and Integration runtime services (at infrastructure level).
- Maintain and manage hybrid identity infrastructure, including Microsoft Entra ID (Azure AD), Active Directory, Privileged Identity Management (PIM) and Conditional Access.
- Monitor and implement controls to ensure the security of infrastructure and services in alignment with Energy Safe standards, Cloud Adoption Framework, Essential Eight and other government cybersecurity frameworks.
- Oversee infrastructure-related components of Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity Planning, ensuring recoverability and availability of critical systems.
- Support automation and scripting of operational tasks using PowerShell or equivalent tools to improve reliability and efficiency.
- Assist in planning and implementing cloud-based infrastructure projects and contribute to enterprise architecture development.
- Develop and maintain accurate infrastructure documentation, configuration records, and change control logs to support audit and compliance obligations.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders and external vendors to resolve incidents, fulfil service requests tickets, deliver infrastructure changes and provide expert advice to support informed decision-making and effective service delivery.
- Provide guidance to project teams on deployment and integration tasks and contribute to skills uplift across the team.
- Participate in ICT governance, change ma
nagement processes, and the development of infrastructure-related policies and procedures.
To be successful, you'll have:
- Extensive of hands-on experience in Azure management, with demonstrated success in managing complex cloud environments.
- Strong knowledge of Microsoft 365 administration, including SharePoint Online, Purview, Exchange Online, Teams, OneDrive, and Intune endpoint management.
- Solid understanding of cybersecurity frameworks and practices, including experience applying controls align with the Australian Government's Essential Eight or equivalent standards.
- Proficiency in scripting and automation, especially using PowerShell, to support efficient system administration and operational workflows.
- Sound knowledge of networking principles and protocols, including virtual networks, firewalls, DNS, VPNs, and network security within a hybrid or cloud-based environment.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues effectively.
- Clear communication skills to convey technical information to diverse audiences.
- Collaborative approach to working across teams and with stakeholders to achieve shared outcomes.
- Tertiary qualifications in Information Technology or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant experience.
- Industry certifications (e.g. Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator Associate, M365 certifications) or equivalent experience. Including formal training or certifications for PowerShell for managing Azure resources, automation tasks, and scripting
- ITIL certification (Foundation level or higher), demonstrating knowledge of IT service management practices, change control, and incident management in a structured operational environment.
- Experience using specialised Back-up software such as Veeam. (Desired)
- Experience with Microsoft cloud native backup and recovery tools and procedures, including Dynamics 365 (Desired)
